“I am confused. I thought you lived with Andy.” Tina said.

“No I lived with Anne. The night I got pregnant we were fighting and Andy and I got really, really drunk. Nine months later Jess came along.” Bette said.

“So she stayed with you through the whole thing.” Tina said.

“Yeah she was angry at first but quickly got over it. She was a major part of our lives until we moved.” Bette said.

“Why didn’t she move with you?” Tina said.

“She said her life was here, and that if it was meant to be that we wouldn’t be able to stay away from each other. I promised her when we left that I would keep in touch and let her know how Jess was getting along.” Bette said.

“Really.” Tina said.

“Please don’t be angry with me.” Bette said.

“I am not. Just tell me what is going on next time okay.” Tina asked.

“I won’t I promise.” Bette said.

“I am starving we missed lunch and its almost dinner time. Let’s go find Melvin and Jess.

They found Melvin and Jess in the office around the corner. Melvin’s partner had given Jess a sucker.

“What have you got?” Bette said looking at Jess.

“A sucker. Granddaddy said I could.” Jess said with the sucker still in her mouth.

“Daddy, you know we don’t let her eat candy this close before dinner.” Bette said.

“Relax its just a sucker its night like it is going to spoil her appetite. I figured that it might tide her over until we can get to dinner.” Melvin said.

The night and week went by quickly. They meet Kate and Alyssa at the airport on Sunday night around 11.

Airport

Kate and Alyssa were waiting in the terminal for them.

“Hey Jess are you ready to go?” Kate said.

“Yeah” Jess said from Bette’s arms. She was very sleepy. Tina handed Kate Jess’s book bag.

“Here I put her Legos and a change of clothes in there.” Tina said. She leaned close to Kate. “Her Gameboy and games are in there too. The charger is in the front pocket.” She whispered.

“Now boarding Flight 78 to London.” The flight attendant said.
