    Love Lost, Chapter 3

    Love Lost, Chapter 3

Bette drove down the dark, relatively empty highway lost in her head. In the distance she could see the sun starting to peak over the horizon, and though beautiful as it was, her only thoughts were of the little girl visible to her through the rearview mirror and Angel’s mother asleep in the passenger seat. She couldn’t believe this was real. The pessimistic part of told her for sure this was a dream, that this was just a figment of her fantasy imagination. Maybe she was going crazy. After all these months of crying and attempting to hold it all together, she finally lost it.

Crazy or not, Bette was content to let this fantasy play out for the rest of her life. If only it was to drive around these two sleeping beauties, she would be happy.

Bette continued to drive on automatic, not paying much attention to her surroundings. She was too busy replaying the conversation and events that just took place to care where her subconscious took them. They had been on the road now for about 3 hours; the busy L.A. interstate far behind them as the route took on a more rural appeal and slowly wound into the mountains. Occasionally, Bette would snap out of her thoughts long enough to check on her precious passengers, but never became fully aware of where they were going until she pulled in beside a simple, secluded cabin near a beautiful lake.

Taken aback for the first few seconds she sat there, Bette casually allowed the happier memories of this place to be remembered: her proposal, making love into all hours of the night, and their quiet walks beside the lake and along hidden trails into the woods. Bette was pulled from this reverie by the distinctive sounds of a yawn and caught the tail end of Tina stretching to wake herself up.

“Good morning,” she said, and was rewarded by a shy smile.

“Good morning,” came the reply. Tina glanced out the van window attempting to ascertain their location. Bette easily read the emotions in her face. First, there was confusion, then recognition, and finally a bit of sorrow as she dropped her head. She turned her sorrowful gaze back to Bette’s not really know what to expect.
