    Lucky in Love (Chapter 24)

“Yes,” Helena rubbed Lara’s arm. “Were it not for Lara and Alice, it would have been me. I don’t understand what’s wrong with her, but I’ve taken steps to try to protect the children until she gets hold of herself.” Helena’s phone vibrated on the table. “It’s Kathleen, will you excuse me a moment?”

“I’m sorry to bother you,” Kathleen spoke quickly, “but something about this doesn’t seem right. You always make sure I know when there is a change of plans.”

“Slow down,” Helena’s concern was immediate. “What change of plans?”

“Winnie picking the children up here to bring them to you…”

“Listen to me, Kathleen. Under no circumstances is Winnie to leave with Jun Ying and Wilson.” She was on her feet, purse in hand. “Do you understand me?”

“They are painting one last plate together,” Kathleen said. “She doesn’t seem to be in a hurry.”

“Hang on,” Helena put her hand over her phone. “Lara, call the police. Winnie is at the pottery place. She told Kathleen that she is bringing the children to join us for dinner.”

    “We’ll drive,” Tina offered.

Alice’s dream was the same every time. She relived her fall in excruciating detail. It wouldn’t have been so bad if she’d woken up before the landing, but so far she’d hit the marble floor every time. And each time she awoke with a start, gasping for breath. Fortunately for her, Dana arrived a few minutes before the inevitable and recognized the signs. She slid onto the bed and took Alice in her arms, stroking her hair and murmuring reassurances as Al calmed. Alice smiled at Dana when her head cleared. She kissed her and reached for the tablet PC.

    “I’m so glad you’re here.”

“Thank you for letting me come back,” Dana grinned.

    “You look a lot better.”

“I did everything you asked. A good meal, a bath, a little pampering and four full hours of sleep.”

    “Did you bring it?”

“Yes,” Dana fished in her pocket for a Ziploc with an Ambien inside. “I’ll take it when you take yours.”

“That was half an hour ago.” Alice wrote. “Take it now.”

    “Alice, you know I don’t…”

“You agreed. Please take it. I can’t sleep without you.”

Dana stopped protesting and chased the pill with a swig of water from Alice’s bottle. She got out of bed long enough to retrieve their duvet from the chair. She kicked off her shoes and jacket and was ready for bed. Snuggled together in the warmth of each other’s arms, Alice and Dana indulged in a tender kiss before both slept peacefully through the night for the first time since the fall.
