My Skin is Painfully New – Chapter 13

    Previously:

Christina, you are making the worst decision of your life, said Helena, pushing the curtain away in disgust.

Tina stole a nervous glance in Bettes direction, wondering why she had been silent throughout the entire exchange. To her surprise she saw Bette staring at her, tears streaming down her face. It was several moments before she was able to look into Tinas searching eyes and speak.

Tina, Bette pleaded, Tina, you are the only person in the world that I have ever loved. I am so in love with you. And I am so in love with this baby. Bette gently took Tinas beautiful face in her hands and looked at her directly in the eyes. Tina, please tell me that I have another chance to be with you.

Miss Christina Kennard, your chariot awaits, said the friendly orderly, pushing a hospital green wheelchair over to Tinas bed and pulling down the guard rail.

Oh, right, said Tina, clearly flustered by the interruption of the emotional exchange. She squeezed Bettes hand tightly once and released it, trying to move her legs over the side of the bed.

Hey, thats what Im here for, said the orderly, while expertly guiding Tinas body out of the bed and into the wheelchair.

Whoa, dizzy, said Tina, gripping the arms of the wheelchair tightly.

Thats not uncommon, given what your bodys been through, he said. Your blood pressure is still low from your dehydration and that can make you quite dizzy.

Do you want me to get the doctor T? asked Bette with worry etched across her face.

No, Im fine now. So where are we going? asked Tina.

Only to the finest room in the house! replied the orderly. Are you an actress or a politicians wife?

No, laughed Tina, and I dont need a special room. Please just put me in a regular one.

Nope, Ive got my orders! Excuse me Miss, he said gesturing to Bette, would you mind pushing the IV pole for me?

Ive got it, said Bette and the three made their way slowly to the elevator and up to the maternity floor.

Tina, exhausted from the short journey, closed her eyes as a parade of nurses, doctors, nutritionists, phlebotomists and other assorted personnel came through the room. Bette began taking notes, as it became clear to her that Tina was overwhelmed with the number of people and their various roles in her care. After a full 5 minutes passed with no interruptions, Bette closed the door, shutting off the two women from the bustle of the hallway.
