They were both well wrapped up and Bette was wearing a rucksack containing a change of clothes for Angie. Tina took hold of Bette’s hand as they crossed the nearly empty street
    “You okay “Bette asked – the silence for that time of the day in central New York was almost too much to comprehend
    “Yeah – just hope that she’s warm enough “
    “Shane will have taken the best care of her” Bette promised Tina “I am more worried about Shane – I know that Angie owns thick boots and a warm jacket – less sure about our surfer Shane”
    “Hell – you are right “
    They both fell silent
    “This is surreal “Tina said finally “
    “The silence or the snow?”
    “Both – and we are both so wrapped up in other things that we didn’t know this was coming”
    Bette grinned “I know – that had crossed my mind – can I just say something “
    “Of course “
    “I am sorry that I messed up last night – I know it wasn’t as romantic as you wanted it to be”
    “I did want it to be more than we managed to make it but in the end I was probably being unrealistic. It would have been awesome to have had you come home and I tell you what I was planning and everything but life happens. In the end does it really matter if in a few weeks’ time I take a pregnancy test and we find out that I am carrying our second child? I should have warned you or given you a hint that I wanted you home ready for a special adult night- and I will always tell you in future if I am letting Angie have a sleep over”
    “It’s okay – – I was being touchy – we are okay and that’s all that matters”
    “It does- I would kiss you but there is not much of either us visible at the moment- are you going to try and go into the gallery?”
    “I will go in and check the heating – a burst pipe would cost me serious money at the moment given some of the stuff I have in there. I will pick up my paperwork and work from home for a couple of days. I can divert the gallery’s main phone to my mobile – do we have enough food in?”
    “Could do with some milk – I just got a food order delivered yesterday morning “
    “Great timing – we might be snowed in for a while. You should call your folks – we don’t want them setting off here in this weather”
    “No – you are right – it should be fun being stuck in the apartment with you and Angie”
    “She will need amusing “
    “I know – here we are – this is where they should be- back to being mothers now sweetheart”
    Tina looked at Bette who she could only recognize because of her voice and her dark eyes- the rest of her face was covered with a scarf and a warm hat.
    “I love you – and for the record you are going to be the best mom to our second child – as good as you are with our first “
