    It took an hour during which time Tina’s parents had arrived at the apartment with lots of baked goodies, then everyone had had coffee and slices of banana loaf and finally they all headed out to Central Park. Bette had her best camera with her so she could take lots of pictures of the new

    It took an hour during which time Tina’s parents had arrived at the apartment with lots of baked goodies, then everyone had had coffee and slices of banana loaf and finally they all headed out to Central Park. Bette had her best camera with her so she could take lots of pictures of the new family who had found one another in the last few months. Jack was very quiet – lost in his own thoughts just watching everyone playing with Angie who was in her element because she was with her favorite grownups. After ten minutes of watching he walking on his own Bette caught up with him
    “Solitude can be a hard thing to get out of the habit of “she remarked
    He looked at her and smiled “I know I should be throwing snowballs at Angie “
    “You should but this must be a very beautiful sight to you “
    He nodded “First snow of this amount I have seen in over two decades “
    “There is something very peaceful about snow “
    “There is – I think it’s the purest sort of silence and its beautiful here even without the snow. I cannot get enough of sights like those round me “
    “I don’t pretend to know what you went through – more than enough to punish you for what happened and I know that this is a profound moment for you but “
    “Yes “
    “The most beautiful sight in this park at the moment is the one that you have been ignoring for 15 minutes – three generations of your family enjoying themselves and putting aside years of differences and absences behind them. I would not belittle what you went through Jack – you or Mary have more than earned a happy retirement but time is short and your daughter wants new memories of her dad and Angie is just loving the fact that she is outside in her favorite Park with her moms and her grandparents. You have a new role in your life for the first time – grandfather “
    Bette spoke quietly but with real authority and for a few seconds it looked as if Jack would object to Bette’s honest opinions but he smiled after a while
    “Yes – you are right. I was the one who got out of bed this morning with the full intention of wanting to see Tina and Angie whatever it took. But I do suffer from too much introspection “
    “I was the Queen of Introspection – I know you were in an actual real prison cell but I was in a cell of my own making and in some ways that is a lot harder to get free of. Maybe you are in your own prison still “
    “Yes – yes I know. I love being free – but you are right. It is hard to realize that life has changed – do you know I hate having the bedroom door closed at home now”
    “That is understandable enough “
    Jack sighed and stopped and looked round him at his wife and daughter and grand-daughter. Tina was gathering snow for a snowball – Mary was talking to Angie who was – as usual talking too much.
    “That’s freedom Jack – being able to go and throw a snowball at your grand-daughter. I know it’s hard – I know it’s real hard but you survived the physical prison – that’s proof that you came out- these are your rewards – a grandchild”
    Jack nodded “Thank you Bette”
    “I know that Tina and Angie got me out of my self-imposed prison cell and I have never been happier – leave the reflection for midnight with a scotch and a roaring fire -go enjoy your family “
