Out of Closet (TiBette time-travel romance), Ch. 61
The next day they all took a carriage to visit Katie and Bette experienced a déjà vu. More tears, more laughter, and more questions. Bette had to repeat her story a few times because Katie kept interrupting her by bursting into tears in the middle of the story and constantly wanting to give her hugs to make sure that Bette wasn’t a ghost.
Bette was eternally grateful that Christina was there with her. Her presence was not only comforting but it gave Bette the kind of strength that she only felt with Tina. Thoughts of Tina made Bette wanting to cry and she did, knowing that nobody would find it unusual. There was not one pair of dry eyes in the house.
Bette felt overwhelmed, happy and confused, all at the same time. She was genuinely happy to be reunited with her family, especially Katie, because they were always so close. She missed her big sister tremendously. She thought that the pregnancy made her even more beautiful but it made her concern that the doctor insisted on a bed rest. Katie was trying to reassure her that it was just a precaution but Bette could see worry in their mother’s eyes too.
But what made Bette even more anxious is what she read in her mother’s diary about Katie dying in childbirth. Seeing her so alive and happy made this knowledge seem surreal and Bette wanted to do something to change the outcome of her sister’s pregnancy. She remembered the article written about Katie’s funeral that mentioned a hooded stranger appearing at the funeral. At that time Tina thought it was just some distant relative who wanted to remain unknown or simply the writer’s imagination, but knowing what she knew now Bette realized that she was that hooded figure.
Did it mean that I came back and hadn’t done anything to safe my sister’s life? Bette thought of a few pills she had in her pocket that she brought with her in case she was brave enough to do something about this situation. That idea, though, had presented the dilemma of changing the past so drastically that the future might not be the same when she returns.
That thought was immediately followed by another one: Will the portal still be open for her to return to the future and to Tina?
