Planet Terror and the Crazy 88
“Baby, baby, it’s ok. I’m going to give you that day off, today, ok? But first thing’s first.” Bette looked up again. This time the coast was clear. She left Helena by the water, standing on one leg and scoping the scene. Bette jogged to the opening ahead of them. There, the infected woman whom they had seen before, stood waiting. She did not make a move for Bette, cowering in the shadows instead. Bette decided to try something.
“Are there any more of you back here?” She asked calmly, raising her guns. The corpse shook her head slowly. “What should I do?” The infected nodded to her guns. Bette smiled grimly. “I’m sorry.” She said sadly, putting the thing out of its misery. She moved cautiously, leading with her guns, and peered around the corner. On the other side, a vast, flat field led to the highway directly in front of their beach. Bette strode out into the open field, looking around her in all directions. The coast was clear, but how would they keep this spot guarded? The infected could easily climb up the rocks, they already had, and attack them at random.
“Fuck!” She cursed quietly. They would have to string mines all along this field. Small explosives to warn them at least, if they couldn’t stop the infected outright. “Helena?” She called out.
“Yes darling, are you all right?” Helena’s voice was fairly clear.
“Yeah, I’m climbing up the rocks now, ok? Don’t shoot me.” Bette climbed nimbly, nearly leaping to the top. “Hi baby.” She smiled down at Helena.
“Hello gorgeous.” Helena smiled up at her.
They sighed happily.
“Anyway…sweetheart, there’s a huge field back here. It’s our weak spot. These rocks aren’t very steep. What do you think we should do?” Bette took this opportunity to scan in all directions. It was a beautiful view from up the small hill. It was also flat, and could probably hold half a dozen tents.
Helena spoke what she was thinking. “We should camp a permanent guard out here. I’m sure you’re thinking of explosives, but darling, when this whole thing is over, we don’t want a landmine issue on our hands.” Bette nodded in agreement.

Loved it… but we missed the shark and zombie rumble, dangit! That one had me really nervous again, I was sure someone was going to die, but it wasn’t who I thought. Okay, the only two references I noticed were Kill Bill (not a zombie flick) and 28 Days Later. (Unless Dawn of the Dead was in there — kid with the doll, maybe?– and I missed it) Excellent again, helebette, thanks for this!
Hooray!
Oh my.I am hooked on this story, even though it is rather ridiculous.
If civilization can survive this nightmare, I think Jenny’s next book should be all about baby names. Constance the Ignoble? It’s a very scary situation when you have to rely on her for strategic thinking. helebette, do I detect some distain on your part towards the corporate world? First Starbucks, now the suited zombies.
Jenny’s sudden appearance was more frightening than any zombie fight, slow moving or otherwise.
Love Kill Bill 1&2. Alice is crazy. They took great pride in killing the suits. Where did the shark come from. Going to S America is a long way. and Jenny did make a wee bit of sense. thanks
LOL @ “Do Zombie/shark fights turn you on, baby?” Oh man, I felt for sure someone other than Dakota was for the chop, Jenny is so maniacal in this it’s delicious, I’m blaming you for my current lack of work, but it’s such fun, ditto halfofone .. they need an escape, but secretly I like them fighting the scary zombies, i like the suspense :)
Nightmarish. It’s like the Day of the Triffids trying to rebuild a life amongst all that horror. But a trek across country would be awful too – they need an island.
