And as that story was told, Helena and Bette and the women who filed into the room to listen to Bette speak, all soon realized…
…that maybe the end of the world wasn’t such a bad thing afterall.
“And so, my darling girl…” Helena leaned down, continuing Bette’s moral for her. “If zombies can be trusted to destroy an Empire…”
“Then bring on the zombies!” Alice finished.
The infected gathering at their gates couldn’t agree more.
Now…
“Hey!” Dylan came wandering in. “Whatcho guys doing?” She chomped on a piece of homemade bread, courtesy of Lara, and listened to Bette’s political ramblings for awhile. She wasn’t much of a political being—and didn’t want to admit to having voted Republican once when she was 25—so she shrugged and waited for a moment to interrupt. “Army barracks folks are coming over for dinner tonite. Lara and Peggy made lasagna.”
Helena looked incredulous. “My mother cooked? How odd.” She mumbled then, “I guess the world really is coming to an end.”
“Shhh, don’t say that around the baby.” Bette chastised. “Let’s go eat.” She helped her girlfriend to her feet, kissing her firmly on the mouth. “Be a bit more…I dunno…optimistic.” She tried it on for size, playing a different role than her usual.
Helena handed the baby over with a smile. She watched Bette and their daughter, enjoying their interaction. They seemed to bring out the brighter side in one another, though they were both so serious on their own. Helena loved the deep bond they shared, apart even from her own bond with them.
Dylan came up behind her, wrapping an arm around her shoulder. “Y’all right?” She grinned, mimicking Helena’s English’ism.
“Just fine. How’re things with you and Catherine?” Helena asked this question quietly, since her friends’ relationship dramas always seemed to involve more than just two people in the group.
“Wonderful. Just fine.” Dylan shifted as Helena’s arm made its way around her waist. She appreciated the affectionate gesture, having grown weary of the affection that came only from a person’s desire to sleep with her. “We’re monogamous again. No more orgies for us.”
Helena smiled gently, sneaking a look at her friend out of the corner of her eye. “I thought I heard an awful lot of giggling from your room the other night. But I guess that was just you two.”

Uh-oh, that last line sounds ominous. If you’re taking votes, put me down for the Eternity-for-Belena option. I’m sure 99% of your readers mentally beat Helena to the punch before she uttered the sentence, “Jenny’s never been normal.” Two posts in one day: lovely!
Rufus, I thought the same re: Jenny. I swear when Bette leaped the fence, I could actually *hear* that little noise they used to play when Steve Austin would do something that cost $6million (price not adjusted for inflation). Just what exactly was in their “cure” if their skin swallows bullets? And that fog, what gives? Are there like, vapors of hypnotic drugs in them, or like, zombie aspirate? (Wait, do zombies breathe?) I always have loads of questions… (I need answers tho!) And that bit near the end, their “forever” looks pretty damned good. I most certainly do not, however, like the idea of all hell breaking loose, because I’m rather attached to all the girls. Thank you, hb, for another excellent chapter.
Two posts in one day?! Awesome! I think you’ve got the ominous part down sweetie, that’s for damn sure. If that is truly forever…bring on some zombies and let them chew on me and then give me a cure thingy and let me live forever with a hottie like Bette or Helena…great chapter…pps
Too bad the cure didn’t allow Helena to grow her leg back, but I guess the line got drawn at old wounds. Sort of like with she and Peggy. OK, enough philosophising. But somehow Peggy doesn’t seem like a lasagna kind o’ gal. Guess Shane wasn’t invited to the shindig-no raw steak. I do like that Peggy’s taking advantage of her second chance with Chamomile, and as kids go, she’s rather likable. Another ominous finish, hb; and more contact with the zombies. Speaking of, it seems, what with Helena’s little stroll in the fog, that if the infection/cure made them physically stronger, it hasn’t made them any smarter. Are we sure they just aren’t on steroids? Are B & H psychically linked with the zombies now? If so they should try to use the power against the little stinkers.
I have to agree with funnyone I to was hoping for Helena to regain her leg, but who knows it can still happen. Because you do have the power and we know you are not afraid to use it. Excellent update!
