    Provocations Linger-Chapter 8

    Tina’s townhouse, Santa Monica
    Eight months after Provocations

The phone startled Tina awake. A glance at her alarm clock confirmed it was late, a few minutes after midnight. Fumbling for the handset she read the display: A. Piezecki.

A quick burst of adrenaline shot through Tina waking her at once.

    “Hey. What’s going on, Alice?”

“I’m sorry to call you so late Tina,” Alice apologized somberly.

Tina knew it was bad news and just wanted the details.

“What’s going on?” she repeated a little more insistently.

“Everyone’s fine,” Alice rushed to assure her, hearing Tina’s anxiety.

“Tina, I know you are trying to take some time away from Bette so I wasn’t sure if I should call…” Alice stammered.

Tina sat up, turning on the reading light by her bed.

“Alice. What’s going on with Bette? Is she okay?” Tina’s heart resumed it’s quickened state.

“Melvin died, a couple of hours ago.”

“Oh my God,” Tina gasped. “Melvin? Died? Bette must be a wreak.”

“She seems okay right now. Shane, Dana and I just left the hospital."

“And she seemed okay?” Tina asked, doubtful.

“Yeah. She seemed fine.” Alice repeated. “I just thought you’d want to know…”

“Was she crying?” Tina interrupted her friend.

Alice looked at her phone confused.

“Crying? Actually… no I don’t think she cried at all. Dana, did Bette cry?

“Dana doesn’t think she cried,” Alice confirmed again. “She’s probably still digesting it.”

“What happened? How long was he in the hospital?” Tina hadn’t heard a thing about Melvin being ill.

“I’m sorry Tina. I’d planned to call you but he went so fast! Bette and Kit just found out he had prostate cancer a few days ago. He was having dinner with the two of them at the Planet when he collapsed.”

Tina moaned, envisioning the scene clearly.

“Yeah, I guess he already knew he was sick and was refusing treatment. Apparently it was too advanced,” Alice surmised.

“Where’s Bette now?” Tina asked. “Is Kit with her?”

“She’s home. She’s practically lived at the hospital the last four days ago so she’s probably asleep by now.”

Tina doubted that. “Is Kit with her?” she repeated.

“No. She went back to her house. David got here yesterday and he’s staying with Kit.”

    1. Zuzu, I am loving it.. 2004 snippet ACTUALLY made me cry. It was so sweet. [in reality im just a little tired and on the emotional side.] Sam.. is a gonner! woop dee doop, This Tessa thing has to be bad .. and Bette satying so close in peggy’s house.. how perfect.. maybe Peggy will organise for Bette to go to one of Tee’s functions… ah the wonders of fiction.. wonderful as always.. Nr

    2. Soooooo, Sam doesn’t know about Bette. Is Tina doing what I so absolutely hate – lying by omission? That’s so tacky and so S3. I’ll withhold judgement until I read the next exciting installment of this captivating story. Thanks!

    3. Zuzu…still masterfully written. This is really getting good. Something will have to happen to have Bette stay more than 24 hours…or…they’ll meet up back in California. Bye bye Sam…no one told her about the inseparable B&T connection.

    4. So happy to see a new post. I am totally captivated by this story and can’t wait to read what the weekend brings. I’m sensing one very tense car ride from the airport. Thanks for the update!

    5. fabulous , loving this great story line. Can’t wait for your next wonderfully written and developed chapter. Love the mystery between your tibette . PPS. ;)

    6. I am hoping with Bette and Tina’s reconnect comes the end of Tina and Sam. I think Sam may figure it out before Tina admits it though. I am totally hooked on this story!

    7. Let me clarify for you, Sam. The word you’re looking for is “wife”. I do hope it’s not going to be too awkward between Bette, Tina and Sam… but I’m really (selfishly) hoping that there’s a breakup on the horizon. With Sam and Tina. Thanks for the post, Z!

    8. Oh my, why would Tina not tell Sam about Bette? Is it because she does not think she and Sam are permanent or is it that she does not want to think of Bette as an “ex?” Very interesting situation. PPS

    9. i feel so jealous on Bette’s behalf…sam sounded so gorgeous in your description; how can bette win here?…i do want her and tina back 2gether BUT…maybe Tina and Sam work? maybe Sam makes Tina happy? I dunno I’m torn here!!! pps

    10. You write so beautifully – the sadness and the heartelt desire to heal is wonderfully written. I know you might not put them back together but you have given us all a conversation that IC never could manage – thank you. I’m hooked when’s the next chapter.
