Road Trip . .Chapter 10 . . . The beginning of the end . . . .
I know what I saw and what I saw was K getting into the back of a white stretch limo with a gorgeous woman. My mind was multi-tasking more rapidly than I could control it – get the luggage inside, no get the bellhop to get the luggage; move the van, no ,wait, let the valet do that; find some cash to tip these guys and find the girls because they are not going to believe this.
I made my way to the lobby, how I did it I dont know because my vision was blurred and my brain still operating in overload mode. I saw Sug chatting on her cell and Bigs at the counter chatting with the desk clerk. When Bigs saw me approaching she ended her conversation and walked toward me. When Sugar saw me walking toward her, she stopped the cell chat abruptly and I heard her say, I gotta go; see you in a few.
Who you gonna see in a few? I asked pointing to her cell.
See who? What? No, no, I said I would CALL them in a few — the girls watching my cat. I just wanted them to know we got here safely thats all- the machine picked up and I wanted to talk to them so I said Id call later. Whats up with you? You look weird.
Sug and I were each given a room card from Bigs and asked the bellhop if he could bring the bags up with us now. It was late, we were tired, and Bigs decided room service would be the best bet at this hour. As we headed toward the elevator I told those guys what I saw out front. I know you think Im crazy, but Im telling you it was her – it was K with some beautiful blonde getting in a limo. I wasnt seeing things.
I entered the elevator first thus not noticing the exchange of glances between Sug and Bigs and the shrugged shoulders as if to say, I dont know about any woman.
Once in the elevator, Sugar on one side of me and Bigs on the other, I became the middle of a moron sandwich. You didnt see K, Sug whispered in one ear. “I know youre telling me you did, but you didnt, trust me. It wasnt her.
Girl, all that desert heat and dirt and ***** has really messed up your brain. Look at you,
Bigs said as she picked pebbles out of my hair and brushed off my shorts. Sug is right. It wasnt K and besides what would she be doing with another woman? Again I didnt notice the visual exchange between my friends and the What the ***** shoulder thing and head shake they gave each other.
The elevator bell rang and the door opened to our floor. The bellhop and his cart full of our luggage exited first followed by me. Fine, I said disgustedly at them. Believe what you want and think what you want of me, but I know what I saw. I walked with the bellhop leaving those two behind and ignoring them as best I could.
Being the first to the room, I opened the door for the bellhop and handed him $20 after he unloaded our load. He probably deserved more having to put up with two dirty, smelly, crabby dykes (and one ***** by association) on that seemingly forever elevator ride. Once inside we assigned beds– I, again, not letting those two share accommodations of any sort. Bigs called firsts for the shower while Sugar strolled to the balcony and opened the sliding glass door . She leaned on the rail and observed the action below around the pool. I decided that I would head to the casino for a few minutes and try my luck at the Blackjack table. I needed a diversion.
Hey you guys, Im going downstairs for about 30 minutes to gamble a little.
My heart nearly skipped a beat when both of them at the same time, Sug from the balcony and Bigs from the bathroom, hollered so loudly the entire sixth floor could hear — NO!
Jesus Christ, you two. Whats up with the yelling and why cant I go downstairs for a few minutes? The food wont be here for a while and you two got dibs on the bathroom. Whats up?
No, Sug explained. The food will be here any second and we gotta go over a few details before we all go downstairs and check out the convention hall. So just relax, turn on the radio or TV or read or something but dont go anywhere. Comprende amigo? Besides, you are a horrible gambler. Lets wait until everything is over before you go throw your money away.
She was definitely right about the gambling part – I was extremely unlucky but kept going back because it was fun (yea right you sorry little addict!). And she was right about the food too. No sooner had we finished our conversation when there was a knock on the door.
Ill get it, I said. and dont worry Ill take care of the tip – AGAIN
I opened the door and I am sure the thud my jaw made as it hit the hallway floor could be heard three doors down. K reached up under my chin, gently closed my mouth, gave me a little quick kiss on the lips, popped in the door and said as calmly as could be . .
Hey guys, thought you could use a Shooter.
I wasnt quite as stunned to see K enter the room as I was to hear her use that word – Shooter. I was certain I had seen K earlier so her appearance at the door wasnt as shell-shocking as hearing her. The only possible way she could know we needed a Shooter was to have spoken with my so-called friends. That was a mission word and only members of the mission team used it – it was not to be used lightly if at all. Something fishy was afoot – I smelled a conspiracy – but why was still a mystery.
K turned back to me still standing with door open and my jaw having dropped again. Again she put two fingers under my chin and gently closed my mouth. This time she whispered in my ear, Ya know, babe, a casino is on THE LIST – we could be looking at 130 before the weekend is over.
AH HA I thought to myself. She is trying to create a distraction with that dirty talk. And if I didnt stay focused, it would work. I closed my mouth and the door and watched in silent amazement the obvious staged exchange between the three co-conspirators.
K, oh my gawd, what an awesome surprise! Big feigned ignorance. Its so nice to see you. They walked toward each other and gave each other one of those straight girl hugs -making me even more suspicious.
I was feeling like I was going to throw up! K and my friends were anything but – they liked each other and tolerated each others company but were never too happy to hang out together. This little scene was worthy of an academy award.
Absolutely we could use a shooter, chimed in Sug.. That would be so cool. She walked toward the other two and engaged in a similar hug adding the kiss, kiss one on each cheek.
Guys, guys, I hate to interrupt your little reunion but Im leaving and Ill be back when you all are ready to tell me what the ***** is going on. See ya. I walked out of the room not bothering to shut the door and headed to the elevator missing the little hand waving and shoo -shooing Bigs and Sug did saying to K to go get me.
I held the elevator door for the room service guy pushing a big cart of food – hopefully he was heading to our place. My holding the door for him gave K enough time to run down the hall and catch up with me, hopping on the elevator, joining me for the ride down.
She moved so close to me that our shoulders were touching as we leaned up against the back wall of the elevator. I pushed the casino level button and without looking at her initiated the conversation I really didnt wanted to have.
What are doing here, K,? Why all the clandestine bullshit and secrecy?
Jeez, babe, I thought youd be happy to see me. K turned to face me, her shoulder now against the back wall, me still facing front unwilling to make eye contact. Her hand was tracing an indistinguishable pattern up and down my forearm. She was pleased with the results showing through the breast area of my T-shirt! (*****) Come on, this was going to be our first real time apart since we bought the house and I was just missing you. I called Bigs to see if she minded me hanging around. She said she and Sug didnt mind and asked if I wanted to play. Thats all, really.
So, it was THEIR idea?
Yea, their idea for me to be the Shooter – *****, I just wanted to be with you. She pressed up a little close to me, her hand now moving up inside the leg of my shorts, again tracing an unfamiliar pattern now on my thigh. She didnt seem to notice the other passengers boarding the elevator at every floor we stopped.
How long have you guys been planning this?
I dont know, babe, a couple months maybe, since May. her lips dangerously close to my ear.
I reached down and grabbed her hand as discreetly as I could , removed it from my thigh and turned to face her.
A couple months, uh., I whispered disgustedly. Well since we only bought the house a month ago and have only been in it 10 days, that couple months bullshit just doesnt cut it. I know whats going on K. I just cant believe those guys would help you out and be a part of it.
The elevator stopped at the casino and we let everyone out ahead of us. I pushed Ks hand back toward her and walked out the door heading to the Blackjack table. I sat down and bought $100 worth of chips and placed $25 in front of me for the first hand. A Jack and a Queen for me (Beautiful!) to the dealers 16 – an automatic hit for him.
K followed me to the table, stood behind me and asked with genuine surprise, What do you think you know?
I waved my hand over my cards indicating to the dealer I did not want any more. He dealt himself a 5 – 21! Unfuckingbelievable.
I turned around in my chair and faced K.
I saw you with that blonde woman, K. You were getting into a limo outside the hotel not two hours ago. I SAW you– laughing, talking, touching. I SAW you.”
K looked stunned. She grabbed my hand and pulled me away from the table.
Did you tell those guys what you saw? she asked almost desperately. DID YOU TELL THEM?
