    Chapter 21


    London – 1998

     

    After arriving to the UK, Bette settled with her father in London to spend some time with him before heading to the University to start her final year as a student.

     

    “What’s the matter Bette?” Bette was startled by her father’s voice, she looked at him with questioning eyes.

     

    “I just asked you what’s the matter… what’s wrong with you?” He repeated himself.

     

    “Nothing’s wrong daddy…”

     

    But Bette’s eyes were screaming something different and as cold as his father could be he had noticed right from the start that something was indeed very wrong with his younger child.

     

    “You know… I may be a lot of things and I may have made a lot of mistakes with you… I know I made a lot of mistakes with you… but I do care for you… you are my daughter and I know something is not right in your life…” He made a pause to look directly into the brunette’s eyes.

     

    “So I’ll be here if you need anything, ok?” Despite of being his usual formal self Bette was touched at her father’s words.

     

    Never before she had heard him speak in such a loving way and actually admitting he had made mistakes in his life. Bette felt a bit warmer inside and thought that perhaps one day she would eventually be able to talk to him about other things than art and business.

     

    Melvin Porter knew about his daughter’s sexuality and although he wasn’t pleased by it at all, he was determined to try to come to terms with it.

     

    “I need another… care for another drink daddy?” Bette said while getting up from the comfortable couch.

     

    “No thank you Bette… and I don’t think you should have another one… you are drinking much more than the last time I saw you…” He said with concern in his voice.

     

    And look who decided to show up and be a father… perhaps this was not such a great idea… Of course Bette didn’t say what was in her head, she would never dear to contradict her father. She took her seat back; she decided she would get that second round later, probably in the company of a cute girl who would whisper naughty things in her ear.

    8. I’m glad the gang didn’t put any obstacles in their way, that’s something they are capable of doing all by themselves. Though I can’t help but wonder where Julia was? What are the odds that Alice is right? Probably not, but it would make things easier for Bette. The trip to the UK was a nice setup but I suppose that during this visit things went even more wrong? You’re doing great, thanks!
