The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner After Yale (Part 7, Chapter 7)

I planned to make a salad, broccoli, baked potatoes and steak and had to go to the grocery store to buy most of it. I did that and I also checked for her car outside local Venice bars that we had gone to once in a while. I did not see the Corvette anywhere. I even drove by some of her friend’s homes but there was no sign of her.

On a typical work day we both were home by 6 p.m. I timed the meal for 6:30. I turned on the gas log in the fireplace and dimmed the lights. I set the table in a special way, using all the appropriate silver, cloth napkins and good china. I had bought the best bottle of Merlot I could find in the store, opened it and poured a glass for her with the bottle on the side. I poured water for me in a matching glass.

Everything but the steak was done by 6:30. With hope, I put the steak on the barby out on the patio and cooked it medium rare, the way she liked it. When it was finished I laid everything out on the table, lit two candles and waited, in my chair, with my hands folded in my lap..

I waited and waited, as the food got cold and then I waited some more. I just sat there with tears running down my face. When I needed to wipe it and blow my nose, I looked at the neatly folded napkin and could not bring myself to soil it. Instead I went into the bathroom to get a few tissues.

I left the food on the table and sat on the sofa, in front of the fire. I thought back to that night in the snow bank with Howie and tried to figure out if any of it was my fault and no matter how hard I racked my brain I just could not remember having passionate sex with him.

At 8 p.m. I called Bette at the gallery. Much to my surprise, she answered.

    “Bette?”

    “Yes?”

    “This is Sissee.”

    “I know.”

    “What are you doing?”

    “Paper work.”

    “I made dinner for you.”

    “I’m not hungry.”

“It’s still on the table if you want to come home.”

    “No, I’ll be late.”

I waited a few moments and then added, “Please come home.”

    She did not respond.

“I need you,” I added, with tears taking a familiar route down my face again.

“And I need to be alone.”

“You can be alone here. If you don’t want to talk to me I won’t bother you.”

    “I need to think.”

“I just want you to be here, somewhere in the house.”

    “I don’t trust myself.”

“If you want me to I’ll sleep downstairs.”

“Yes,” she said and then added, “I do want you to.”

“Then I will. I won’t talk to you. I won’t bother you. I just need to know that you’re safely home. I’m afraid you’re drinking.”

    She said nothing.

    “Are you?”

It took her a few moments but finally she answered, “Yes.”

“Do you want me to come and get you?”

    “No.”

    “Are you okay to drive?”

    “Yes.”

“Then please come home. As soon as I hear you come I’ll go into the bedroom.”

    “Alright.”

    She hung up.

    1. This chapter made my heart ache for sissee. i can sympathize with bette’s feelings but i could “feel” sissees helplessness she bought and prepared the meal for bette, hoping for the best. i luv this story. thanks

    2. u know as much as i luv bette and tina, and bette and helena, i have really grown to luv these two together, and it is so gut wrenching to read this happening to them, but i am addicted to each chapter, and i honestly can’t wait for more!!!

    3. Hi there great story. I really feel with sissee but I can understand Bette side too. I mean her world just turned upside down and a diner well that is sweet of sissee but that would be the last thing on my mind. I hear you think but sissee life turned upside down to, that’s right but she had time to think about it, to get use to the idea. Sissee shouldn’t worry about Bette not wanting her child. She loves her and she would love that child like her own. She just can’t stand that idiot. Maybe sissee can talk to her take a little bit more control just walk into that room and “force” Bette into a talk. Tell her what she feels, how she wished there lifes turned out, like how she saw there family bette’s child. Maybe Bette will open up a little. Maybe I’m not making anysence but I think it’s a great story!!! please post soon.

    4. Gooooodddddd! Bette Porter is so infuriating. She’s so Alpha. If I were Sissee I wouldn’t baby her anymore. Love of my life or not, I couldn’t live with a temper like that. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Sissee would be better off on her own. This chapter really ticked me off, can you tell? LOL! Great job Sissee!

    5. Annieb69, Yes, we all love Bette and Tina together but ths story started before they even met. The problem was that readers encouraged me to continue the saga of SissBette and so it will move into TLW storyline eventually. Thank you for your comment.

    6. colenickel, Thank you for your comment. I like that you are here with us. I have been out of town so don’t have much time for commenting. I just wanted to say though that Sissee prepared a special meal for Bette to keep herself busy and at the same time she hoped it would please Bette. However, it did not turn out very well.

    7. September, Thank you so very much for your comments. I appreciate the suggestions as you would like to see it play out but Bette was not blind to Howie’s sincerety even though she gave him a bad time. Her heart is heavy right now and she wants to do the right thing for Sissee. We will just have to see what she has in mind as we near the end of the After Yale sequence.

    8. kbergin47, Sorry you were ticked off at Bette in this chapter. I guess it’s a crapshoot. Some are cheering her on and other’s see another point of view. That’s why I so appreciate the comments, to know what my readers are thinking. As usual, thanks for your continued interest here.
