The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Living Happily Ever After (Part 1, Chapter 3)
PART ONE: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
Chapter 3
I was looking in the refrigerator when I heard the apartment door open. I held my breath. At least she was okay. No car accident or the like. I said nothing. I was going to be stubbornly quiet until she explained why she did not get in touch with me all day.
Her usual entrance was to yell out, “Sis?”, then throw her brief case on the sofa, followed by a flung jacket. I remembered though that she only had a frilly blouse on when she left this morning, given the pending heat of the day.
I froze to hear those familiarities. Instead, I heard her walk from the front door, looking perhaps into our bedroom, then the office and now she was standing in the kitchen doorway.
“Are you alright?” she queried with concern.
I stood my ground, forgetting why I opened the refrigerator door. I was making a Cobb Salad for us and already had the lettuce torn, the tomatoes sliced, ham and chicken diced, an avocado sitting by and oh yes, I was after hard boiled eggs that were sitting in a bowl of six in the refrigerator. I grabbed two and shut the door, going to the counter by the sink without looking at her.
“I’m fine.”
I heard her put her briefcase down. She walked in closer to take a stand next to me. “Then why didn’t you answer my calls?”
“What calls?” Now I looked at her and honestly, I kind of went weak in the knees because she was so beautiful. She had had her hair cut shorter a few weeks ago and it laid shoulder length in a mass of damp curls. She was a bit flushed from the heat outside, giving that honey brown skin of hers a warm, healthy glow. Her eyes were tired and at half mast. I really wanted to grab her and kiss her hello and tell her I was glad to see her and happy that she was mine but I had to remind myself that I was pissed-off at her.
“I called you at least ten fucking times today and you never answered once!” she said.

Gummy Bear, I have been very busy lately and this is the first chance I have had to check out the responses after I posted it last night and I am please that we got back to 300 plus hits and that the usual suspects have been so kind again to post. Thank you so much gummy. How sweet you are! Just for that I will try to post another chapter for you later tonight.
Mushy, Thanks for your sage comments. Yes, a good chilled martini will mellow both of them.
Oh Kbergin47, thanks for missing a follow up chapter but I just couldn’t get it in last night. My days have been very filled and I am lucky to spend time here when everyone else has gone to bed. As I said above though, I will try for another one tonight since the hits were good.
Bette’s Babe. Always a pleasure to see you here and thanks for your post. Right, Bette did have a tough day at the office so she needs to just sit down and relax with Sissee for a while. And as for modern technology, you are right and so is my sister who recently pointed out how simple our lives were before computers.
a very beautiful chapter again sissee..i must say i really dig this one(smile)..very well done..love the writing
even though nothing much happened in this chapter i absolutely loved it! it’s so true how you feel within a relationship when you can’t get hold of someone and you get really pissed off! bette just needs to calm down now and let it go…i’m sure with the help of alcohol sissee can bring her round!
Great chapter! I guess that’s probably happened to everyone at least once, very frustrating tho, so I know where Bette’s anger is coming from. Sis will calm her down, but oops on Kit spilling the beans about David. Where’s the 2nd post? I miss it! (pouty face)
Finally another chapter for us fans. Most of us can understand the frustration of both Bette and Sissee face because of a cell phone not being turned on (isn’t it a curse of technology?). It’s a relief for me to know that Bette was ok although she had a hard day at work. I anticipate more talk between B & S soon :-)
