The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Tina (Part 3, Chapter 10)
I got out of the car and walked across the street, up the steps and rang the doorbell. I cocked my head to one side and listened. I heard nothing. Then I heard footsteps and the door opened.
Bette stood there with Angelica in her arms and a big smile on her face.
“Hi Sis!” She freed her left hand and extended it to me. “Come in.”
I took her hand and let her pull me in. I tried to be happy for her finally getting to see her daughter but I was too blown away. I stepped in, closed the door behind me and looked around for Tina. I saw her sitting on Bette’s couch. She stood up with a surprised look on her face and exclaimed, “Well, Sissee Gardner! What are you doing here?”
“I came to see Bette,” I said.
Tina strode across the room and gave me a hug. She chatted on, saying, “Hey, you’re looking good! Where’s Howie? How are the kids?”
As I answered each of her questions briefly I was thinking that Bette obviously had not told Tina about us. I glanced at Bette and then put a hand on the baby’s arm and gave her a little squeeze. “I’m so happy for you Bette,” I said quietly. Angelica looked a little afraid of me and turned her head toward Bette.
“Tina, just dropped in unexpectedly about three minutes ago,” said Bette. “She finally gave in to my pleas about seeing Little Boo.”
“That’s wonderful; that’s great,” I said, trying to smile but only managing to look perplexed.
Tina looked fantastic. She had lightened her hair. It was shorter than usual and it swished back and forth when she talked and moved. She had on a yellow cable knit sweater and a pair of jeans. I had not seen her for a long time and I thought she had slimmed down nicely. She actually looked radiant as if I had forgotten how beautiful she was and it damn near killed me. A surge of real jealousy reared up it‘s ugly head and my confidence took a nose dive. I looked at Bette and said, “Would you rather I come back another time?”

OMG! What a great chapter. I really thought Tina would blow her stack when she found out about Bette & Sissee, but she seemed to take it well, for now anyway. I’m just leary of her. You left off at a very romantic place so I can’t wait till the next chapter. Have a great afternoon!
wow! wonderful chapter, can’t believe ur doing such an amazing job with this story, please don’t stop, keep them coming..can’t wait for the next update..too anxious
Gumbsee40, Thank you for your comments. That praise is music to my ears. It seems you are getting to be a regular here so all the more power to you. Hope you keep it up because it means a lot to me
An interesting approach to the Tina/Bette story for this latest post – it is good to see some of the relationships beginning to resolve. Thanks for continuing to write for us.
Kbergin47, I already posted to you but I don’t see it so I will try again. You know, where Tina is now – in 2006. She thinks she is in love with a man and even though she was shocked to hear that Bette and Sissee are a couple, in her state of mind she quickly rallied to remember what her priorities are. I think that is why she took it so well. You say you are leery of her. We’ll have to see what happens. Thanks for your post and you have a great afternoon too!
3raphael, Thanks for being here. It is a DIFFERENT approach to TLW characters but not at all is it the Tina/Bette story. Yes, this chapter does try to resolve their differences as it affects Bette and Sissee. In TLW Joyce Wischnia tries to scare them into communicating. Here, Sissee simply suggests they communicate. It works.
Just a note to let you know I’m still reading. As I’ve explained before I read mostly from my cell phone and the popup format doesn’t allow me to leave comments but anyhow, sissee, you just keep raising the bar with every chapter. Just when I think things are smoothing out then you add another twist. As for this chapter and the recent developments, Wow! I’m really surprised at Tina’s restraint. I really love Bette and Sissee together and as Tina pointed out they do communicate very well, perhaps sissee, just has a way with Bette. It seems with every chapter you post I find myself more and more asking, “Tina who?” but this chapter was a little hard to read being the tibetter that I am. And I felt the sting from some od the comments Bette and Tina directed at one another as I’m sure the did. Like when Tina told bette she was really serious about Henry I know that must’ve hurt just a little and also when Tina asked “how long” referring to bette/sissee and bette answered “since 1985” Ouch that completely minimized the Bette and Tina relationship/connection. But then again after following this story perhaps I’m the one who’s had it wrong…maybe just maybe Sissee Gardner is Bette’s one great love. (Sorry for the long post but it’s been awhile)
Colenickel, Happy to see you posting again and please don’t ever apologize for a long post. I love everyone’s posts, big or little. I think Bette and Sissee learned early on to communicate with each other because after they were lovers, they were confidants plus their Yale degrees more or less put them on equal footing. Of course Sissee the writer wanted to make sure B&S were communicators because B & T clearly were not. As for Tina’s restraint, as I explained above, you have to remember Tina had crossed back over to men. Her heart belonged to a man at the time. She does start with some direct questions but then reminds herself that it shouldn’t matter anymore. I honestly can’t see how Tina could hurt Bette by saying she was really serious about Henry. The way Tina hurt Bette was by taking her daughter away from her. Tina left Bette and with what Bette rediscovered with Sissee, she was over Tina. And then the 1985 remark may have minimized Bette and Tina but both Bette and Sissee qualified it as their love affair really began AFTER YALE but then stopped for a duration until AFTER TINA.
This is again a very telling chapter of the love of Sissee to Bette (I see that more than the love of Bette to Sissee). I was not happy when I realized Bette didn’t tell Tina about Sissee and her earlier (she finally revealed their relationship after talking for a while). I felt bad for Sissee. I have that insecure feeling that Bette will dump her for Tina, and it took Sissee a lot to come out to her own family (Howie and the three grown children). I love to see B & S together, not B & T together (I am still a tibetter for TLW) in this adventure story, can you make sure this adventure would have a happy ending of B & S? :-)
Bette’s Babe, I think you misjudge Bette. As she told Sissee, Tina had just gotten there, three minutes ago, so we have to assume Bette spent that time taking her daughter into her arms and holding her close with tiny words of affection. Prior to that, if you recall, Tina never returned her calls so Bette did not have much of a chance to tell her anything. As for your hope that this adventure has a happy ending for Bette and Sissee, I can’t really say that at this time. I hope you’ll read on since there is a 2007 series coming up and a 2008 series that I am presently also writing elsewhere.
