The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Tina (Part 3, Chapter 12)

My three kids helped me move on my end while Angus, Shane and Alice assisted Bette using a rented U Haul as well as individual cars. We had ordered a new, queen sized bed which was delivered on Saturday morning.

It was a hectic week but we got it all together. Bette still needed to bring more personal items from her house. She had put an ad in the Post to rent it unfurnished, except for the master king sized bed, which she was giving away and eventually wanted the house to be empty of any trace of she and Tina.

By sunset on Saturday we were in our own apartment. There were boxes everywhere and in general we had a gigantic mess on our hands. While Mary was preoccupied in her own room, arranging things to suit her fancy, with her kind of music blaring, Bette and I were unpacking boxes marked, “kitchen”. Within a moment we had both lifted a box up on top of an island and stopped to look over at each other. She on one side and me on the other. The world suddenly stood still for us, as we locked eyes and smiled affectionately at each other.

“Hey,” she said, putting one of her hands on top of mine.

    “Hey.”

“Let’s just stop and go for a walk.”

    “Really?”

    “Yes.”

“Okay, “ I nodded. “Sounds good.”

We left the kitchen and I stopped at Mary’s door. Justin Timberlake was singing his twitchy, audacious electro-pop album, “FutureSex/Love Sounds”. I yelled at her to turn him down and reminded her that we have closer neighbors now. She jumped up and turned the volume down, giving a quick apology, saying, “Oh yeah, I forgot.”

I blew her a kiss and told her that Bette and I were going out for a walk.

There was a paved sidewalk outside the apartments that squared the complex off. We walked to it and began to stroll.

“It’s all happened so fast,” said Bette.

    “I know.”

“I thought we just needed to slow down a bit and take a deep breath.”

“You’re not having second thoughts, are you?” I asked.

“Oh God no,” said Bette quickly. “In fact, I’ve never been more sure of anything else in my life.”

    “Good.”

    “What about you?”

“You’re all I’ve ever wanted, you know that. You’re all I ever dreamed about, so, no my darling girl, I’m not sorry about a thing.

    “It’s like we’re 21 again.”

“With a little baggage on both sides.”

“You’re not talking about hips are you?” laughed Bette.

“Noooo,” I laughed back. “You know what I mean, a lot has happened over the years to both of us.”

“But we never let go of each other.”

    “No, we never let go.”

As if it was a cue, she reached for my hand and held it as we ambled along, happy, contented that things were going so well for us. Yes, there was Howie to deal with but a little patience on our side might go a long ways. He had been terribly hurt and we understood that. Hopefully, in time he would learn to accept our love and realize that some things were just meant to be.

When we came back to the front of the complex, we walked to our apartment, opened the door, stepped in and quietly closed the door behind us.

(This ends the After Tina series. The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner After Howie (2007) will begin soon, on this same thread).

    1. This is so good. Nothing like it on the site. I am a true blue TiBetter but I can appreciate another pairing if it is well written like yours. Looking forward to the next section.

    2. azmama, I automatically smile when I see your comments because you are so supportive. If I were really out there plugging a book, I would hire you to be my publicist. Thank you so very much.

    3. Very beautiful….see I don’t know why writers always think they need to keep the drama hi otherwise people won’t read…..A good story is all you need, and this is one!!!

    4. Things seem to be falling into place. Bette’s new job, Sissee’s new job, the apt. I just feel really bad for Howie. I liked the hips & baggage remark. Very funny!:)

    5. Kbergin47, Yes, the writer feels sorry for Howie too but those things do happen. When Oprah ran her show on married women who were having affairs with other women, remember what she said in the end, “Life’s too short. Fallow your heart.” My philosophy has always been “you get what you give” in this life. You may all have to throw away by keyboard and handcuff my hands to keep me from letting that happen to Sissee but we shall see what we shall see. Thanks for the post, my friend.

    6. I just read the last 11 chapters. I just love your story. I like to wait and read many chapters at the same time so that I can really get the feel of the story. Can’t wait to read the next section.

    7. Now that this After Tina Part is over, we will soon read the next Part (after Howie), I have been following your adventure stories since after Yale. What strike me about this part of the story is that Bette and Sissee finally get together as a couple, the coming out process for Sissee was quite challenging, and Bette was on her side to support her all and all. Please post soon to let us know what’s going on about their adventures after Howie. This time, you have more flexibility to write about B & S as Howie was not in TLW s/l (like Sissee). Can’t wait to read more.

    8. Brouhaha, Now that is a whole new perspective on how to read this story. I am sure you get the flow of it better than catching a chapter here and there. However you read it, I am just glad that you are reading it and commenting on it. Thank you very much.

    9. Bette’s Babe, Yes, I will be posting the After Howie first chapter soon so that we can move right along. I really am pleased to know you have been with us so long. I always enjoy your posts and hope you will keep them coming. Thanks a lot. We have a long way to go together.

    10. Honda90, Thank you very much. I have to smile at that knowing what is coming. I open the next segment showing how wonderful things are in Bette and Sissee’s life but I had one reader begging for more drama. It was because of her that drama does follow.

    11. Sarah_Schuster, It pleases me to know you are excited for the next saga to begin. I think the After Howie series is the longest one I wrote. I started after TLW ended in 2007 and wrote right up to where it began in 2008. Trust me, Bette and Sissee will be having a lot of adventures.

    12. I must say that when you started this series I was a bit skeptical. You have, however, done a wonderful job with this and I’m looking forward to seeing the AH section. Thanks!

    13. Dear gum, Yes, Bette and Sissee are “happy and in love” but trust me, they will have their ups and downs in the next After Howie series, just like everyone else does. However, they will also have some unique adventures, just like the title suggests. Thanks for being here.

    14. Id18, I’m glad that we made a believer out of you, after your starting out a bit skeptical. Thanks for tagging along with us and posting your support. I’m grateful.
