    How about I call you tomorrow afternoon and well go lunch somewhere, my treat, for your birthday?

     

    *I couldnt believe I had it in me to be so decisive… And to lie like that!*

     

    That sounds great T, Im sorry I havent asked you before about my party, it just absolutly slipped my mind…

     

    Hey… dont worry Bette… Its ok really, Im sorry I wont be able to make it, but Ill see you tomorrow then

     

    She sounded slightly relieved and I heard something else in her voice (could it be happiness?) when she hoarsly said: Yeah, Im looking forward to it

     

    So am I! Have a great birthday… and party of course!

     

    When we had ended the call I glanced in a window and saw the big smile on my face.

     

    *Well that woman sure makes me happy*

     

    And without further ado I continue my hunt for the perfect present.

    Chapter 19, the party

     

     

    Bette:

     

    When Alice picked me up at 5 that afternoon, I felt it was my birthday through and through… Kit had spoiled me immensly, just staying with me all day, chatting, giving me attention and several small gifts (one of them was a bottle of non-alcoholic wine which made me laugh)

    She had just left me at 4.30 telling me she would get dressed and meet me at MILK later.

     

    Hey there beautifull!

     

    Alice said, hanging out of the window of her car she had decorated generously

     

    Get in the car birthdaygirl

     

    Are you serious Al? What have you done to this thing?

     

    I said smiling to my friend as I approached the heavily ornamented car.

     

    Just a few thingies I thought youd like She said with a broad grin Just hop in baby!

     

    And, smiling at her childlike enthousiasm I got in the car only to find…

     

    Balloons Al?

     

    Yeah, I thought youd like it She winked, turning to me for a tight embrace Happy birthday!!!

     

    Thanks Al I couldnt help it, I laughed out loud… It was great to see Alice so exited. She laughed with me
