    Author Notes:

    Set in the early 1700’s; the pirate Shane McCutcheon finds the treasure of a lifetime when she happens across the sassy and stubborn Carmen Morales. Chapter 16: Carmen’s initiation. Chapter 17: Battle on the Groene Draeck.

    She placed a hand over her eyes and pinched at the bridge of her nose, angry with herself for not stopping Carmen, for not having the courage to tell her exactly what she meant when she had spouted her words at Carmen. She had said what she wanted, but not the way she had wanted to, and now Carmen was mad at her.

    Shane watched from across the deck as Carmen came out from Mark’s quarters with Mark in tow and shook her head. She had already known why Carmen had gone to talk to him and it hurt her to see that Carmen was really going through with it.

    Mark bellowed out to the crew and called them in, in order to discuss a vote. Shane sighed to herself and shook her head, not moving from her place against the bulwark as Carmen watched with confusion as Shane didn’t come over to fight with her again. To, at the very least, vote against Carmen’s indoctrination into their crew.

    Shane wanted to. She felt the need arise in her to protect Carmen from a pirate’s life, but at the same time, she knew she had no right to. That Carmen wasn’t a little girl. Shane looked to her shoes and kicked at the deck. If someone she cared about told her she wasn’t allowed to do what she desired, she wasn’t sure she would be able to forgive them. So she stayed quiet and observed from afar as the pirates gathered around Mark.

    “Alright, boys!” Mark held his hand up high into the air with the pirate articles clenched tightly in his fist to let the crew see. “Carmen ‘ere, has come to me, and has requested to go on the account!”

    Mark gave a pause as the pirates began to talk and whisper amongst themselves at the highly unorthodox request. The men had never before seen a woman who had actually wanted to join their ranks and it quickly brought up chatter between them. “Because of this ‘ere unusual request, it will be put to a vote!”

    “What is this?!” Gomey spoke up, ever the pain in the ass. Mark rolled his eyes the very moment he heard Gomey’s voice. “There ain’t e’en supposed to be a woman on this ship! It’s in the bloody articles!”
