The Black Flag Ch. 16 & 17
She scanned over the many pistols from all over the world and stopped on a beautiful french pistol and she knew it was hers. Smooth dark brown wood with a brass muzzle and a styled hammer that matched the brown and gold hilt of the sword she had just picked out. She smiled a little bit to herself. Most pirates on board didn’t seem to care much whether their pieces were fashionable, with the exception of Shane who’s sword and pistol were both black and silver. Little things like that let Carmen know that even though Shane looked like a pretty boy she was still very much feminine.
She picked up the french pistol and cocked back the hammer and pulled the trigger to see it’s working condition. It snapped down fast and let sparks fall into the unprimed pan and fizzle out. It was perfect. Mark grinned and handed her a small pouch filled with small round shots for her newly acquired pistol. “Thank you, Mark.”
“You’re welcome. You might want to try some target practice to get used to yer pistol before we come across any prey.” He gave her a tight squeeze on the shoulder and rolled up the articles before walking through the group of pirates to other matters.
Carmen smiled and inspected her new pistol. She glanced up for a second at Shane who was watching her from a distance and her smile faded a little. Shane looked, for lack of better word, lost. The lanky pirate shook her head, took a bottle of rum straight from the hands of another pirate and walked away into the forecastle.
“He really cares about you,” Carmen jumped at Victor’s voice and turned to him.
“Who does?” Her eyebrows came together and she glanced around the deck looking for the “he.”
“Shane.” Victor clarified and Carmen almost gave herself a palm to her forehead. Of course he meant Shane, but after a whole night with Shane, she was already finding it hard to think of her as a man.
“He certainly has a weird way of showing it…” Carmen said and bit her lip. She wanted Shane to be happy for her, but that obviously wasn’t the case.
“Carmen, maybe you need to try to see it from his point of view… He’s finally found himself a true treasure and now he risks losing it.”
