    The Black Flag Ch. 16 & 17

Carmen cocked a brow at the African man, “What treasure? What the hell are you on about?”

Victor gave a chuckle mixed with a sigh, “Carmen, he’s worried he’s going to lose you now… Maybe you should make amends before he does end up losing you with this animosity between you.”

“There’s no animosity between us,” Carmen lied looking from Victor to the door Shane had gone through. Her eyebrows knitted together in confusion as to how he would know that.

“Please, it’s written all over that beautiful face of yours. Just go talk to him… Preferably before we set chase over that merchant vessel over there.” Victor’s head cocked a little to the side as he stared out across the sea.

Carmen turned her head to see the faintest outline of sails and was almost shocked that Victor had noticed them before the man up in the crow’s nest.

“And tell Shane not to hit the bottle so quick. Or you’ll be losin’ him.” Victor arched a brow at Carmen just as the man high up in the crow’s nest yelled down to them,

    “Sail ho!”

Carmen bit her tongue, her stubbornness getting the best of her. “We’ll be fine.” She said curtly to Victor and walked past him to talk to some of the other men, leaving Victor to shake his head.

    Chapter 17

“Give me that.” Victor demanded but before Shane could even respond the large man had already swiped the rum bottle from her hand.

Shane sighed and tossed her head back as Victor shook his head looking at the near empty rum bottle. “We’ll have that merchant vessel in boarding range in minutes and you’re sitting down here takin’ in liquid courage? Why are you two so stubborn? Huh?”

“It’s no-,” Shane had barely opened her mouth before Victor cut her off again.

“Shut up. Carmen’s to stubborn to listen. You’re to stubborn to listen-”

“Then tell someone who cares.” Shane grumbled and took her rum bottle back from Victor. “If she wants to throw her life away, that’s her choice…”

“What makes you think she’s throwing her life away? Hmm?” Victor’s eyebrows came together and he glared at Shane, “She’s spent months in the brig of a slaver, we gave her a taste of freedom and now she wants to take it. That means she’s throwing her life away?”
