Marina sat by the bedside of a woman that vaguely reminded her of herself, the same dark hair, the same eyes.  That was the outside; on the inside they were different.  Vastly different, Marina‘s hand caressed the old woman’s wrinkled skin.  Arthritic fingers curled from work, and age.  Marina could see herself in this woman in so many ways, yet she was not the same, since she knew she loved with her heart.  This woman had never truly showed her love.

“She spoke of you, often when she could remember.”  The nurse said in a heavy accent; Marina looked up at the woman, dressed in scrubs that reminded Marina of Jayden and Sam.  Professional yet caring and collected.

“She never called they only found out that I was…  In LA until about a year ago.  I’d been there for years, and away…  They just didn’t know where I was until then.”  Marina stated softly; the nurse going about her business, and Marina stepped into the small foyer.  They’d never bothered to really find her, she’d served her purpose, hadn’t she?  Her father came in front of her, staring at her hard.  Marina sighed again, biting the inside of her cheek as he continued to look at her.  She said nothing; blinking coolly.

“Why you don’t come earlier?”  He asked in broken English instead of his native French; Marina grunted, turning away.  Had he really just asked her that?  She tried to keep in her anger; but she was failing miserable at this task.

“I came when I could.  Do not take that tone of voice with me!  I won’t have it!”  She shot back he flinched at her anger.  She bristled with it, her body shaking with it as she spoke, her full lips shaping the words, adding an edge to them.

“We didn’t know dat you were free.  We had to learn from outsiders, strangers.  Not from my daughter, from others, you dishonor us that way.  You didn’t care what happened to us?”  He asked, as Marina walked away from the man.  Turning her back on him, taking away any power he ever had over her.
