The Nearness of You, Chapter 1
“But…” Tina trailed off.
“But?” Bette responded, constantly drawn in by this woman’s ability to sway her thoughts with a word.
“Well, … they’re very… academic.”
“What does that mean?”
“Don’t you worry you’ll alienate potential audience with your word choice? I remember a few times when passages had me searching for my dictionary.”
“Is learning new words suddenly a bad thing?”
“No, I’m just saying most people aren’t willing to read something that so blatantly challenges their intelligence.”
“Well, if they don’t want to be challenged, they shouldn’t read it. I didn’t write if for them, I wrote it for me, and the people who are willing to invest the time and the brainwaves.”
Before the tension could build any further, Tina unconsciously laid a comforting hand on Bette’s arm, causing them both to stop and the anger to ebb as they wondered at the connection. Tina slowly withdrew her hand, watching it as if it weren’t her own and gently placed it back in her lap. An awkward silence ensued, neither one quite sure how to follow the subtle act of intimacy that had transpired. Finally, Tina spoke.
“I loved them,” she began. “They gave me a profound sense of… peace, no matter how stressed out I was. A kind of meditative effect.”
“Thanks.” Bette turned back to the window, squinting against the sun as it reflected off the water. The deep blue hues had begun to show in the bare hills, the snow glittering as the sun continued its descent. The green of the water, blue of the hills, and light off the snow made Bette’s heart sing as no work of art ever had been able to, and she longed to be off the train in the midst of it rather than speeding towards a city of steel and glass. She found herself wanting to show it to the blonde who she could feel watching her, wanted to show her how much more powerful the actual nature was than the words Bette used to describe it.
“God, I wish I had a camera,” breathed Bette. She could see Tina relax and take a deep breath out of the corner of her eye.
“I’m not sure how much good that would do from the train,” Tina smiled in return. Bette turned to face her, the intense appreciation of the vision she’d witnessed apparent in her eyes, so focused Tina held her breath, careful not to disturb it, not to inadvertently coax it away.
“No, not from the train. Out in the woods, in the silence so deep you can hear the leaves rustle. On a path where all that exists is you and the sound of the crunching snow beneath your feet. Somewhere so far in that the squirrels don’t run from you, and you can’t hear a trace of humanity.” Bette found herself blushing for a second time. Never has she shown that much to someone, much less a stranger.
“… I never thought you’d speak like you write.”
“Need to borrow my dictionary?” teased Bette.
“Stop.” Tina playfully hit Bette’s arm, both of them again noting the ease with which they interacted, how Tina had, somehow, slid into the seat next to Bette and now sat almost touching her. They noticed the heat that built and filled the small space between them.
“You never told me what you do,” inquire Bette with genuine interest. She’d never felt this strong of a yearning to know another person, to learn her nuances and be able to anticipate her reactions. She’d always preferred to remain alone and seek out company only when she craved it. The blonde offered a very welcome change.

“You need to borrow my dictionary?” That one line made me smile so wide…wonderful beginning. Still catching up on your past works, but also looking forward to this journey! Thanks!
I love beginings. I like this one.. thus far. I like the academic, professional Bette meeting Tina on a random train. I can’t wait to find out more about both of them..
Intriguing…nice job. PPS and often.
It’s intimidating to post a story without knowing where you’re headed, but you’ll also find it’s somewhat liberating. I’m looking forward to seeing where this takes us (and you). And bring on Bette’s vocabulary! I have my dictionary ready.
Someone finally let me finish reading this new story of yours (any idea who I am talking about)and I think it is a very good beginning. You know I love everything you write, so please continue on with this one NY. Thanks!
new B&T beginning, hurray…can’t wait for more
I like! You realize you will have to spell-check without fail for the rest of this.
Ooooo – me likes!
Superb writing. I’m fascinated, please keep going.
I am in awe of your writing ability. Vasser, ummmm, sounds like you had fun there. I live to far away from my alma mater U of Hawaii to ever get that feel of the campus life again. Love the story and am bummed that we do not know what Tina does for a living.
This is lovely NY and I can hardly wait for the next chapter. You do like the old songs, I do too, and they always tell such a loving story; as do you. Next chapter please. Thanks for showing us how to fall in love.
U write amazing stories; I hope you will post again soon or start “posting as you write.”
Lovely beginning! PPS.
this looks promising ny continue plz
This is intriguing so I’m waiting for the next post. I love your stories.
Your way with words has got me loving the story already. The imagery, and the ease they have with each other is wonderful. (Nice shout out to Marina as well.) I’m in, I’ll wait as long as necessary between posts. You just take your time, I’ll be reading. Anyway, it’ll help me get through a few more cycles… ;) I’m a ways off ever having acceptance, so I’ll join you in the “resurrection” stage. Thanks for the chapter, NY.
Hey NY, Great start. I’m looking foreward to a lot more of this story and to the challenge. I’m sure you will do great……PPS
I already love it, first because it’s different, second because it’s good. Why do I have the feeling you could make most if not all of the story happen on the train?
I am so happy you are doing another story. I love B&T beginning’s and your writing. Can’t wait for the next post.
HOOKED……CONTINUE…PLEASE!!!!
Amongst many things I could say to you right now, let me say that you have this very way of yours each time you start a new story, a way that leave us hanging on the last sentence and desperately wanting for more… So here it is… please more! thanks ;)

Ahh the pressure of posting. It is the buggar that can get you. Hey relax and enjoy we all love all that you write including this new story and I for one will wait as long as it takes for you to post it all. Thanks
Well, of course I like this… you wrote it, didn’t you? It’s always such a PLEASURE to read your stories… (yes, damn it! LOL). Your writing is so evocative… it should be read out loud – it even sounds good. ‘The Nearness of You’… ahh, the title of one of my all time favorite songs. I can’t wait for more… cause I for one know that this is going to be great. Thank you, NY!
I love this Kind of Bette, She seems to give more of herself. A writer, teacher and a camera freak.
