The Nearness of You, Chapter 4
A week passed soon enough, though, for Bette and Tina, parts of it seemed to crawl. Visions of the other woman haunted their thoughts as the nighttime hours crept by and returned with the sun in the morning.
Though she enjoyed her vacation, seeing her friends again, lounging at the beach, taking lots of pictures and going out at night, somehow Bette couldn’t get her mind off of Tina. Too often she found herself missing pieces of conversations, falling behind the group, or hurrying to finish her meal because she’d zoned out thinking about the blonde from the train. Everywhere she went she seemed to smell Tina’s perfume in the flowers or heard her sweet laughter in the rustle of leaves, felt her gentle touch in the breeze or felt her brown eyes in the warm sunshine.
Unaccustomed as they were to seeing their friend infatuated, her friends recognized the signs, and by the end of the week they were ready to pack Bette and put her on the plane themselves. They saw her off with nudges and ribbing, only encouraged by the pink that sprung into her cheeks at the mention of Tina, as Alice had spilled the beans the instant the group was together. Bette’s sighs and absent-mindedness were sure signs of her restlessness, and they were nothing if not encouraging anytime she showed real interest in a woman other than herself. It certainly happened rarely enough.
Likewise, Tina found herself wistfully daydreaming of the day Bette was to stop by the café, forgetting to put in orders to the kitchen, leaving off parts of other orders. The day Dana came by, she found herself having a one-sided conversation with a very glassy eyed Tina. Try as she might, she couldn’t hold the blonde’s attention, and Dana soon opted to come back the day of the big reunion.
Tina became aware of her fiddling with everything to ready the café for Bette’s visit. She thoroughly cleaned the main seating area, straightened and replaced the tables that had subtly shifted as customers traveled in and out through the years. She oiled the squeaky door hinge and shined the bell. She swept the front walk and cleaned out the front flower boxes. She continually reorganized the cups and attended to innumerous other details, driving her help mad. A few days before Bette’s due arrival, she went out and bought vases, placing them on each table and filling them with blooms from the nearby flower shop.

You know, NY, this is really funny because there is definitely this “Shop around the corner”/”You’ve got mail” feel to this story that I’m not sure you even thought about when writing your fic, especially in this new chapter, in the way your protagonists both anticipate and prepare for their date as if they had never actually met before, but only knew each other as pen pals – and believe me, I’m not saying this just because I want to insert a movie reference to please you – As a matter of fact, when reading the first three chapters of “The nearness of you” I already had a few Meg Ryan movies in mind, but I didn’t mention that since I was not sure you would have taken it as a compliment ( even though I personally really enjoyed most of them ). Anyway, your descriptions are soooo evocative, so vivid, so refreshing, it’s pure bliss to read your stories. I’m really looking forward to reading about that first B&T “date” so please please please keep writing and do not hesitate to make your chapters a little longer, I don’t believe anybody will mind. LOL ! And thank you for sharing your talent with us.
Goodie soon Bette and Tina will be face to face after a long week apart. I don’t know who is more excited them or me. Post soon please.
So happy to see that you posted again. Hope with working and all your “other” activities we will get another chapter before you go back to school. LOL! I can’t wait to see how they are together at the Planet and on their date too. Take care my friend and hope to hear from you sooner rather than later!
Very verrrry nice, AFI. There is not much that hasn’t already been said. Welll…I will say that I love the flow of your writing….IMHO, the lilting and airy quality of the story mirrors or shall I say is the perfect backdrop to the emotions of the ladies. Everything about it is a build up…is anticipatory in a clever , efficient and almost lyrical fashion. Honestly, I have been hankering for a vacation and I sorta feel like I’m taking one. Ok, we’re all at the Planet…desiring to sip the beverage of our choice, but instead are excitedly attempting to mimic “flies on the wall”….awaiting…I know you are busy…but PPS.
Hey NYGayLady, I am loving this slow and sensous build up to Bette and Tina’s date. The gals are so ready to be there for each other. I do hope that this is the beginning of a beautiful realtionship. Bette and Tina deserve some happiness. Can’t wait. Many thanks for returning to the site and continuing thsi delicious and delightful tale. A Fan
There you are..I wondered what happened to this story. Glad you are back. Please don’t make us wait another month for the next post :)
Ok so next time i know to beat you over the head when you don’t post. Good to know. thanks for this chapter, lovely as usual.
Hey Gay!!! So happy to see you adorning the site once again with your writing. Isn’t it lovely to have school behind you? I have my degree behind me now, only to prepare for Grad school. Anyway, the story is beautiful. Ilike the tempo, the ease, the romantic air to it all. I must also say, that I adore the selection of music. I have been sent a few music CD’s to bring me up to “date” so to speak. However, it is the flavor of those type of artists which touch me, inspire me, and move me. Thanks so much for a wonderful chapter.
Hey my friend!! I am SO happy to see this post from you! I blinked a few times, just to make sure! LOL! I love the pace of this story, it’s building up to the date so nicely and it’s like we’re experiencing all of the emotions right along with them due to your amazing writing. I can’t wait until the date and how that all plays out! Hope all is well and we’ll chat soon! *HUGS*
look who’s back. i can’t believe you made us wait so long. don’t ever do that again. you hear me???? do not do that again…anyway. this was amazing. thank you for posting. PPS(!!!!!!!!!!!)
Woo! I’m really glad to see you back, NY, especially when you’re bringing Grade-A posts like this with you. Can’t wait for the next chapter (take your time, as long as it’s coming, yeah?), and the long-awaited date… thanks!
Decades in NYC didn’t teach me to be subtle, nor patient. When you want something you need to clear. And I finally got it. Good to see you back.
There’s actually a place called Insert City? I kept thinking that was something you wrote until you thought of a good town. lol They have it bad for each other. Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.
I totally dig this story. Super glad its back. Its back, right? However, way to tease us since you get riiiight up until they are practically meeting before you stop. I can’t wait for them to interact again. Love the way this is written, though.. so try not to leave us hanging too long. Good luck with all your summer stuff.
Leave it to Lament to point something out that I did when I was half asleep… and fixing that… now.
beautifully written BUT HURRY UP, I CAN’T WAIT FOR THEIR 1ST LOOK…lol..and the rest…
Good chapter and please post soon. Can’t wait to see B&T see each other again, thanks!
