The Nearness of You, Chapter 4
* * * * *
Bette felt as if she could breathe again, being back in New York. Stepping off the plane and later down into the bustle of the city that met her as she stepped off the shuttle, she felt herself settle, come back into herself. She’d loved her time in Los Angeles, not only for how different it was from New York, but she also loved the seemingly endless days of sun and pleasant weather, the fresh, warm, spontaneous, rains. But there was something about the sprawling highways and hot, almost desert-like landscape that left something to be desired, something that continued to call Bette east, at least for the time being.
There was a different feeling to the air in New York City, where she had spent a great deal of time before moving north to the Hudson Valley area and a little town called Tarrytown in hot pursuit of quiet and fall foliage to die for. Her small house offered her a level of relaxation she never knew she was capable of, the silence of the woods around her infiltrating her being and allowing her to grow as she had been unable to do while surrounded by honking taxis, yelling people, countless ringing cell phones and skyscrapers that almost seemed to close it all in. Her house sat far back from the road, an almost inconsequential one-bedroom affair. A few simple flowers adorned the space directly in front of the front porch in the spring and summer, the barren beds still somehow inviting even in their winter hardness. A worn, brick path meandered over to the gravel driveway. The shutters of the house needed paint, the bushes needed trimming and the garage need reproofing. But to Bette, it was heaven.
The Thursday of her date with Tina, Bette got up at dawn, stepping out into the crisp, wintry morning armed with her camera. She was in desperate need of calming and waking up, having barely slept the night before. After drawing a few deep breaths, she set off down the trail behind her house, reveling in the sounds of the birds waking and the crunch of the frost beneath her feet.
A couple hours later she returned, pink faced and shivering, though the rising sun steadily beat back the cold. She’d taken dozens upon dozens of pictures, capturing the sun’s first rays as they peaked over the horizon and sparkled off the frozen dew. She entered through the back door, the screen door banging noisily shut just before she locked the inner door. She headed to the bathroom, discarding her dirty, wet clothing as she went. She started a hot shower, letting it wash away the traces of aches brought on by her rigorous hiking and reaching for pictures at odd angles. She eventually climbed out, standing in her towel before the mirror as she prepared her hair and face. When that task was done, she wandered up the stairs to her bedroom, already debating what to wear.

For her part, Tina slept little more than Bette, anxiously tossing as she lamented a myriad of imaginary tasks she had wanted to accomplish before this day arrived. This day. How long had she waited? Surely longer than since the day on the train. Since before college or high school. Since even before junior high. Had she really always been waiting?
Around dawn, around the time the birds began their first songs, Tina roused, allowing herself to stretch languidly before pulling herself from bed. She sleepily stumbled to the bathroom, flipping on the shower and letting it warm up as she brushed her teeth. Slipping out of her robe and into the warm water, she allowed the steady stream to beat away her tiredness, leaving her refreshed and excited to see Bette again. She quickly but expertly prepared herself, quietly humming a tune she couldn’t quite place as she locked her front door and walked the few blocks to her café.
She unlocked the door, a subtle smile playing across her lips at the tinkling of the bell on the door, as happened every morning, though no one was ever there to see it. She flipped on the lights and began taking down a few of the chairs from off the table tops as she made her way behind the counter to fire up the coffee makers. She involuntarily shivered, turning up the thermostat to warm the open, chilled space. She likewise started the CD player, putting Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Rosemary Clooney into the tray. Again the small smile danced across her features as “The Nearness of You” wafted through the space.
Tina continued her preparations, grateful to hear the tinkling of the bell as her usual break-of-day customers arrived, a full out beam ensuing as Dana waltzed up to the counter later that morning.

You know, NY, this is really funny because there is definitely this “Shop around the corner”/”You’ve got mail” feel to this story that I’m not sure you even thought about when writing your fic, especially in this new chapter, in the way your protagonists both anticipate and prepare for their date as if they had never actually met before, but only knew each other as pen pals – and believe me, I’m not saying this just because I want to insert a movie reference to please you – As a matter of fact, when reading the first three chapters of “The nearness of you” I already had a few Meg Ryan movies in mind, but I didn’t mention that since I was not sure you would have taken it as a compliment ( even though I personally really enjoyed most of them ). Anyway, your descriptions are soooo evocative, so vivid, so refreshing, it’s pure bliss to read your stories. I’m really looking forward to reading about that first B&T “date” so please please please keep writing and do not hesitate to make your chapters a little longer, I don’t believe anybody will mind. LOL ! And thank you for sharing your talent with us.
Goodie soon Bette and Tina will be face to face after a long week apart. I don’t know who is more excited them or me. Post soon please.
So happy to see that you posted again. Hope with working and all your “other” activities we will get another chapter before you go back to school. LOL! I can’t wait to see how they are together at the Planet and on their date too. Take care my friend and hope to hear from you sooner rather than later!
Very verrrry nice, AFI. There is not much that hasn’t already been said. Welll…I will say that I love the flow of your writing….IMHO, the lilting and airy quality of the story mirrors or shall I say is the perfect backdrop to the emotions of the ladies. Everything about it is a build up…is anticipatory in a clever , efficient and almost lyrical fashion. Honestly, I have been hankering for a vacation and I sorta feel like I’m taking one. Ok, we’re all at the Planet…desiring to sip the beverage of our choice, but instead are excitedly attempting to mimic “flies on the wall”….awaiting…I know you are busy…but PPS.
Hey NYGayLady, I am loving this slow and sensous build up to Bette and Tina’s date. The gals are so ready to be there for each other. I do hope that this is the beginning of a beautiful realtionship. Bette and Tina deserve some happiness. Can’t wait. Many thanks for returning to the site and continuing thsi delicious and delightful tale. A Fan
There you are..I wondered what happened to this story. Glad you are back. Please don’t make us wait another month for the next post :)
Ok so next time i know to beat you over the head when you don’t post. Good to know. thanks for this chapter, lovely as usual.
Hey Gay!!! So happy to see you adorning the site once again with your writing. Isn’t it lovely to have school behind you? I have my degree behind me now, only to prepare for Grad school. Anyway, the story is beautiful. Ilike the tempo, the ease, the romantic air to it all. I must also say, that I adore the selection of music. I have been sent a few music CD’s to bring me up to “date” so to speak. However, it is the flavor of those type of artists which touch me, inspire me, and move me. Thanks so much for a wonderful chapter.
Hey my friend!! I am SO happy to see this post from you! I blinked a few times, just to make sure! LOL! I love the pace of this story, it’s building up to the date so nicely and it’s like we’re experiencing all of the emotions right along with them due to your amazing writing. I can’t wait until the date and how that all plays out! Hope all is well and we’ll chat soon! *HUGS*
look who’s back. i can’t believe you made us wait so long. don’t ever do that again. you hear me???? do not do that again…anyway. this was amazing. thank you for posting. PPS(!!!!!!!!!!!)
Woo! I’m really glad to see you back, NY, especially when you’re bringing Grade-A posts like this with you. Can’t wait for the next chapter (take your time, as long as it’s coming, yeah?), and the long-awaited date… thanks!
Decades in NYC didn’t teach me to be subtle, nor patient. When you want something you need to clear. And I finally got it. Good to see you back.
There’s actually a place called Insert City? I kept thinking that was something you wrote until you thought of a good town. lol They have it bad for each other. Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.
I totally dig this story. Super glad its back. Its back, right? However, way to tease us since you get riiiight up until they are practically meeting before you stop. I can’t wait for them to interact again. Love the way this is written, though.. so try not to leave us hanging too long. Good luck with all your summer stuff.
Leave it to Lament to point something out that I did when I was half asleep… and fixing that… now.
beautifully written BUT HURRY UP, I CAN’T WAIT FOR THEIR 1ST LOOK…lol..and the rest…
Good chapter and please post soon. Can’t wait to see B&T see each other again, thanks!
