The Princess and The Writer – Chapter 1

    Chapter 1

This is a story about a tennis player named Dana Fairbanks and a tabloid writer named Alice Pieszecki. Theirs is a tale of unexpected love and the unbreakable bond of an entwined destiny. Like all good stories, we have to start at another place, another time where it all began.

Once upon time on an early April morning, a young couple sat sipping coffee contently in their garden as the sky turned a shade of gold and the cool breath of dawn settled lightly around them. Surrounded by blooming tulips and wrapped in their cashmere robes, the man draped his arm across his new bride’s slim shoulders, their bare feet resting on the soft grass moist with morning dew.

His name was Irwin Fairbanks. He stood at 6 feet tall, his salt and pepper hair trimmed and neat. His lean, muscular body craved by years of tennis and running, he kept a posture of a soldier, giving him an imposing presence. At 31, he was already the CEO of his father’s company, a responsibility he relished and took pride in. For years he was considered the catch of the town, women had come and gone in his life but none had mattered until the day he caught the sea blue eyes of one Sharon Burke.

Across the room at his brother’s wedding reception, Sharon Burke wandered in on the arms of another man. Her blond hair tied in a bun, highlighting her sharp cheekbones and her strapless dress revealed the softness of her skin. Behind him, the band was singing Don McLean’s "And I Love You So", fittingly so. Being a man of action, he strode over, taking big steps. He threw his manners aside and slid himself between Sharon and her escort, holding her eyes, he said, "Hello, I’m Irwin Fairbanks and the moment I saw you, I knew I have to meet you."

The young woman who held his undivided attention, Sharon Burke was born into a life of polished silverwares, summers in Paris and closet full of Prada and Gucci. She waltzed through her teenage years, full of promise and potential. At 29, she had watched her friends married and started their own family, living in houses too big for a young family. She would denied it when asked, but the truth was, Sharon Burke longed for a family of her own. A daughter and a son for her to spoil, and a husband to share her joys and fears with. A vision that was slowly fading as suitors disappointed her time and again.
