The Princess and The Writer – Chapter 1

It was touch and go that first week, they had came close several times to losing her. Even Nurse Hart had mentally prepared herself for the worse, something she had chided herself for doing ever since. The Fairbanks’s faith and strength had never wavered, a trait that was evident in their daughter who kept on surprising them as she fought her way back from the brink of death. For the Fairbanks, it was never a question of if, rather than when they could bring their little girl home. Now, as Sharon excitedly talked about their positive meeting with their doctor, Nurse Hart said a silent prayer for them, hoping God would not betray the hope she saw in Sharon’s eyes.

Nurse Hart wasn’t the only one praying for a little helping hand. Two floors above them, room 206 of the East Wing, a young mother grudgingly found herself asking that entity known as God for help. She wasn’t what one would call a believer but desperate times calls for desperate measures. An hour ago, she had made the mistake of reading a pamphlet on ‘Acute Respiratory Infections In Children’ she found in the waiting room. The pamphlet helpfully informed her that 20% of deaths in children under 5 years of age are due to Acute Respiratory Infections and more importantly, 90% of these death are caused by pneumonia, the very same condition that had gotten her daughter hospitalized and her doctor had used the word, ‘severe’ several times.

All these had caused her great distress, the kind that brought out the blazing determination of a mother to protect her child. So there in the small room plastered with smiling yellows ducks and white rabbits on the walls, she got down on her knees by the side of her daughter’s bed and prayed. It was realistically the only thing she could do. The rest were up to the doctors, and at this point, she wanted to believe, God.

"Dear God," She began. "Listen, I know I haven’t spoken to you or even thought of you since the night I lost my virginity to Tony Essner which I know I have yet to thank you for. So, thank you. Now with that out of the way, God, please don’t take my daughter away from me. I know I’m not a great mother, I spent too much time working, went to too many parties and I know I shouldn’t have dumped her with my sister while I went off to Vegas with that no good Mickey Gramond last month but I swear to you, my girl is the most important thing in my life. I’m the idiot here, if you want to punish someone, punish me, not her. She deserves to grow up, to experience life with all its heartbreaks and joy. Please, I’m begging you, help my little girl. I love her so much, please, please." She took a deep, shaky breath, wiping her moist eyes with the back of her hand. Slowly she got up and sat back into her chair, holding onto her sleeping daughter’s hand.
