The Starting Line: Chapter 23
Bette’s car pulled up into her driveway. She and Alice climbed out of the car, I just sat there in the passenger seat. Alice said something about going in ahead of us and walked up the path towards the front porch. Bette stood outside the car regarding me. I had stopped crying halfway back to West Hollywood, and had taken to just staring at the passing scenery. Nothing had been said the entire drive, for which I was happy. It gave me time to get myself back together, put some of the walls back up. I was stone-faced by the time we pulled into the driveway. I glanced at Bette, climbed out of the car, mumbled something about needing a smoke, and walked up the side of the house towards the back deck. As I sank into one of the lounge chairs, I debated how long it would be till someone came out to get me, or they all came out to surround me. I was surprised when I was on my last drag of my ciggie when I finally heard someone step onto the back porch.
“Baby girl, it’s good that you’re home. Where you been girl?”
I glanced up at Kit as she sat down on the chair across from me. “I was around.”
Kit looked me over and handed me a beer. “Well, you look like you need to rest up after your trip.” I cocked an eyebrow at her. “I’m not gonna lecture you, don’t worry. Trust me, I’m in no place to tell you what you should and should not be doing. But I will say this. There is a great group of women in there right now who have been worried sick about you. So before you get all upset, or take off again, just try to hear them out and see it from their side, OK?”
I took a swig of beer and nodded to Kit. We sat in silence a bit longer, then she got up and went back inside. I smiled to myself, one down… I was finishing off that beer and my second ciggie when Marina came out next. We chatted briefly about her Radar nights at The Planet. She sipped her wine as she asked me where I went. When I told her about ending up in San Francisco, she told me about a woman she hooked up with and ended up going there for a week or so. She laughed about being afraid she was going to fall down the hills constantly, or lose her footing on the stepped sidewalks. As we were talking easily about the city and riding ferries, Tina came out to join us, followed by Dana and Alice. I told them how I ended up in Tahoe after that, and Dana talked about going on a ski trip with her family there, and her almost plummeting to her death after following her brother Howie off some trail that ended in a cliff of sorts. Bette and Kit joined us shortly after, and next thing I knew, I was surrounded by a sudden silence. The sharing of stories of people’s trips to these places was done, and the lecture that was started at the church was about to continue. Ding! Ding! Time for Round Two. I could feel the headache starting behind my eyes, or maybe it was just my coming down off the drugs with too little alcohol, but while I was ready to bolt from the back yard, I also knew I kind of had it coming. I had just ditched them. But I had also returned, and all I really hoped was that at least one of them realised how big that in itself was for me.

Kd it’s good to have you back, I really enjoyed the story. I’m glad Shane is feeling the quam. It’s also good that the whole gang is there(whoops forgot Jenny, to bad) Thanks for the up date. Md
don’t think I haven’t noticed, bunky, that it seems to be only MY person you wish to assault by confectionery!
hmmm…. is this another one of those “reasons you shouldn’t drink coke” lessons? I find my downtime at work best spent by going up into the boxes, turning off the lights of the ante-room, and taking a nap until the ushers come to set up for the night…
no it was a very scientific cooking experiment..lol!
Ahh, worth the wait. Thanks so much. :D
you update!! finally!! i didn’t have a chance to let you know how much i love this story. and i love how the gangs would never give up on shane, and never stop loving her. this is my most favorite shane centered story, please keep it up and post soon!!
a very good chapter! i like that shane is finally realising that she isn’t alone anymore..
ok i am first and no body seems to be awake ok , great up date my friend, keep it coming.love
shanesthebest..I think this is an excellent idea. Good and Plenty does have that hard shell..I don’t want to sustain any injuries, and gummy bears are fun to play with!
aah and sour gummies give just that hint of ugh…turtles would make good ninja stars..random thoughts at 4:40am :)
well I wouldn’t eat em, they are essentially flavored rubber, but they are fun to squish together, and there is the bounce factor…ps..I think Shane is the best also, right after Bette!!!
I must step in here and give my words of wisdom… I had a show last night and with nothing to do backstage during a long opera, I realised the true elasticity of the gummy worm… it flies like a rubber band!
Well you have been missed, but it was totally worth the wait..amazing update. So feel for Shane espcially since Sun I got a 10 minute guilt trip on my voice mail from the parental for not calling for a few weeks (even got the whole coulda been hurt..)Again great chap, your writing blows me away.Cheers
Well if what you can hear already is that since Alice heard all of Shane’s breakdown in the church without her permission or knowledge, that she should have let Bette handle it one on one, and not further pushed herself involved… Also, if what you hear already is that I do think that Round 2 was too soon and too harsh, given Shane’s emotional state at that moment, that they could have waited to chew her out and not ganged up on her, then you would be correct. I also think it is wonderful that Shane realizes that she is lovable and that people do care about her, it’s great to let people care, so I have been told. By the way, since you seem determined to pelt me with candy, I vote for Good and Plenty.
Just a thought..Susannah2000, you should consider Gummy Bears they’re soft and have a good bounce :)
if you boil coke in a cast iron pan, gummies disolve in a nanosecond when dropped in..way faster then ice cream (ah what to do when you have no customers to feed)
