The Starting Line: Chapter 23
I lit a ciggie and looked around. “Can I at least get a fresh beer before we start this?”
Bette immediately handed me a new beer, obviously knowing that would be coming when she stepped out onto the patio. I accepted the beer and took a drag off the ciggie. I had had enough time to get all my emotions back under control, so as I saw it, they could throw whatever they wanted at me. And I knew Bette and Alice wouldn’t bring up the breakdown at the church in front of everyone else, so I was safe there. I almost started chuckling as they all looked at each other, trying to figure out who would say something first, or where to start. It was almost shocking when it was Dana that spoke first, as I expected her to be one of the last to.
“What the fuck were you thinking Shane? We thought you were lying dead in a ditch somewhere or something!”
I glanced at Dana, amusement in my eyes at her sudden bravery. Dana caught my eye and then looked down.
“Dana’s right. We had no idea where you went or if you were OK. You didn’t contact anyone for weeks! You finally called Bette, but up that point, we had no idea what happened!”
I glanced at Tina briefly, then back down at my ciggie in my hand.
“Tee and I were ready to file a missing person report on you! We called hospitals looking for you…”
“Al, I’m fine, I’m back, it’s OK.”
“Shane, it’s anything but OK. Do you have any idea how relieved I was when I heard your voice on my voicemail? When I knew that you were at least alive?! Didn’t you think about us? Didn’t you think about what you left behind?”
I took a drag off my ciggie as I avoided looking at Bette. Marina sat down on the chair next to my feet.
“I think what everyone is trying to get at is how worried we all were for you. We all understand that you like your freedom and independence. We even understand that you may not be used to people wanting to check in with you. But you have to understand our position as well. We care for you, and when you suddenly disappeared on us, we were concerned, we worried.”

Kd it’s good to have you back, I really enjoyed the story. I’m glad Shane is feeling the quam. It’s also good that the whole gang is there(whoops forgot Jenny, to bad) Thanks for the up date. Md
don’t think I haven’t noticed, bunky, that it seems to be only MY person you wish to assault by confectionery!
hmmm…. is this another one of those “reasons you shouldn’t drink coke” lessons? I find my downtime at work best spent by going up into the boxes, turning off the lights of the ante-room, and taking a nap until the ushers come to set up for the night…
no it was a very scientific cooking experiment..lol!
Ahh, worth the wait. Thanks so much. :D
you update!! finally!! i didn’t have a chance to let you know how much i love this story. and i love how the gangs would never give up on shane, and never stop loving her. this is my most favorite shane centered story, please keep it up and post soon!!
a very good chapter! i like that shane is finally realising that she isn’t alone anymore..
ok i am first and no body seems to be awake ok , great up date my friend, keep it coming.love
shanesthebest..I think this is an excellent idea. Good and Plenty does have that hard shell..I don’t want to sustain any injuries, and gummy bears are fun to play with!
aah and sour gummies give just that hint of ugh…turtles would make good ninja stars..random thoughts at 4:40am :)
well I wouldn’t eat em, they are essentially flavored rubber, but they are fun to squish together, and there is the bounce factor…ps..I think Shane is the best also, right after Bette!!!
I must step in here and give my words of wisdom… I had a show last night and with nothing to do backstage during a long opera, I realised the true elasticity of the gummy worm… it flies like a rubber band!
Well you have been missed, but it was totally worth the wait..amazing update. So feel for Shane espcially since Sun I got a 10 minute guilt trip on my voice mail from the parental for not calling for a few weeks (even got the whole coulda been hurt..)Again great chap, your writing blows me away.Cheers
Well if what you can hear already is that since Alice heard all of Shane’s breakdown in the church without her permission or knowledge, that she should have let Bette handle it one on one, and not further pushed herself involved… Also, if what you hear already is that I do think that Round 2 was too soon and too harsh, given Shane’s emotional state at that moment, that they could have waited to chew her out and not ganged up on her, then you would be correct. I also think it is wonderful that Shane realizes that she is lovable and that people do care about her, it’s great to let people care, so I have been told. By the way, since you seem determined to pelt me with candy, I vote for Good and Plenty.
Just a thought..Susannah2000, you should consider Gummy Bears they’re soft and have a good bounce :)
if you boil coke in a cast iron pan, gummies disolve in a nanosecond when dropped in..way faster then ice cream (ah what to do when you have no customers to feed)
