The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter One
Bette smokes.
Bette fucks her pain away.
"Not this time. Not again," she whispered to the shadow in the glass.
With strong resolve, she replaced the cap on the whiskey bottle and set the glass in the sink.
Her tired eyes glanced at the clock. "Six hours, twelve minutes," she whispered.
It was twelve minutes after midnight. Six hours and twelve minutes after she’d surprised Tina and returned Angelica to her other mother. Three-hundred and seventy-two minutes after she’d swallowed her pride, rung Henry’s doorbell, and had her daughter snatched from her arms by an angry blur with blonde hair and a venomous stare.
Tina had no words for Bette and the desperate pleas the dark-haired woman made to "sit down and talk things out" fell on deaf ears. Tina had raced away and down a hallway, leaving the front door open. As Bette stepped forward to follow the woman she’d loved for more than eight years, Henry’s angered face and furrowed brow appeared to block her path.
It was another reminder that her past was not her present.
Tina didn’t belong to her. Tina now belonged to Henry.
Angelica didn’t belong to her. Angie belonged to Tina.
Bette belonged to no one and a subtle and creeping worthlessness stung her as she stared up into the eyes of Tina’s new life partner.
"I think you’d better leave," he’d said.
Bette’s words had trembled as her chest rose and fell with anxious breath. "I just need to talk to Tina."
Henry shook his head, his face flushed and ruddy. "No. No. It’s time for you to leave. You’ve already upset her enough."
Hot tears streamed freely down her face as she spoke, her voice quaking and quivering. "I didn’t even…..I didn’t even say good-bye to Angelica. I need to say good-bye."
His eyes narrowed and as much as he’d wanted to be angry with the woman before him, he couldn’t be. Bette had been his competition. She’d been everything more than him.
More successful.
More cultured.
More sophisticated.

MTS is Back! And with a wonderful story! I liked how this story ended on a note of hope (and had Tina and Henry behaving with decency and kindness, even though they were justifiably angry), despite being set in the grimness that was Season 3. I have waited so,so very long for a continuation of The Roommates. Please do give us some of that tale as well.
Wonderful writing. I can feel Bette’s pain and her return to sanity. Sad but hopeful.
Welcome back!!! I am always ready for a new adventure with her new story. This serie was very very difficult for me to watch. And to be honest, I did not watch it all. To sad and unfair on Bette. After all she is Angie’s mother as well as Tina.GOD will keep Angie safe Bette and he will bring you her back eventually.
Excellent story. I look forward to more. I’m not familiar with your other story or stories, but I would like to read Roommates too please.
So happy to see you back and with a new story to boot! I’m partial to “Roommates”, but I like this one as well. Thanks for posting!
WELCOME BACK!!!! What a nice surprise to see your name again! And what a heart wrenching beginning. You wrote this first chapter perfectly….and I do mean perfectly! Thank you for coming back!
OMG, OMG, OMG….I love that you’re back. I wish more of your originators would write again. Those 4 pages just slammed me right back to that moment, it’s been so long since the series has been on and I don’t watch the DVD’s yet. I’m so excited to know your writing again, thanks!!!!
It’s wonderful to have you back and with a very turthful and painful chapter in their lives. We know Tina can be vindictive when she wants but hopefully you will turn her around little by little. So glad Bette put that bottle down. Can hardly wait for the next chapter. Thanks for sharing with us.
