The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Two

    Chapter Two
"You royally fucked up," Joyce Wischnia admonished a well-dressed Bette Porter as the two women sat a round table in the lawyer’s posh office.

Bette sighed and shrugged, "I know, I fucked up. I panicked."

Joyce sighed and tried to keep the edge out of her voice. "Listen. I told you not to panic. I told you I would handle it. Now you’ve really put us in a bad position here.”

Unable to take anyone berating her valiant but misguided baby-sister, Kit cleared her throat and said, "Are you done chastising? My sister has admitted that she messed up. Hell, it’s clear to everyone that she messed up. But let’s get one thing straight, Ms. Wischnia, my sister is paying you to clean up the mess. How about we get to that?" she asked, her left eyebrow raised and her straightened and pulled to a low ponytail.

Angus, seated beside his girlfriend, rubbed Kit’s back gently and leaned over, whispering "Babe, don’t get upset."

Kit tossed him a tight smile as Joyce responded to her client’s protector.

The well-paid attorney held up a hand in defense and replied, "All right. No complaints from me. If Bette wants to retard her case, so be it. But any more stunts like that and I’ll have to drop her as a client. Her actions have the potential to move this situation into un-win-able territory for me. And I refuse to be a loser. The money your sister is paying me isn’t nearly as important as my stellar reputation."

Kit scoffed and leaned back in her seat, a guarded smirk slipping across her face. "Well I thought you were the best. I thought that’s why we were here."

Joyce smiled, her light blue eyes twinkling as she spoke. "Sweetheart, I am the best. But I’m not God. I’m the best because I pick clients that will help me win. And I can’t help Bette win if she doesn’t follow my instruction. I can’t win that way."

There were just the four of them: Joyce, Bette, Kit, and Angus. They’d assembled two days after Angelica was returned to her other mother to hold a strategy session on redesigning Bette’s bid for custody of Angelica.

    1. I appreciate the quick posting which makes it much easier to follow the story line and maintain interest.I don’t agree w/Bette’s decision b/c the longer Tina is w/Henry, the closer Angie gets to him.

    2. So glad you’re back with another story. i’m hooked already. Hopefully, Bette is doing the right thing and giving Tina not only time to “cool off”, but also to see they really should be back together as the family they always dreamed of being. PPS! :)

    3. I hope you have done the right thing Bette. Angie needs you too, and you are right don’t matter what Tina does, Angie is your daughter.Great story great writing too. Thank you for it. PPVS

    4. Thanks for the post…good decision Bette. Angie will be restless and will keep ons asking for her mama B and Tina will not be able to handle seeing her daughter in this state. this will certainly thaw the ice.
