The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Two

"And what if I continue? I drag Angelica through this custody battle and then I arrange visits with her. I schedule my time with Angie and then dance around Tina and this relationship she has with a man who wants to be my daughter’s father? He’s not her father. He never will be. But I will always, always, always be her mother. And as her mother, I have to do what’s best for her. I love her enough to let her go. I love her enough to wait for Tina to stop being angry with me enough to work with me.”

"We have a little girl that needs us and we both need to stop acting as though Angie is a piece of property. I’m going to step away from this right now. I have to. I need to take some time, re-center myself and give Tina time to cool off. And when I’m ready, I’ll talk to Tina and we’ll work things out."

Kit sighed. "What if she doesn’t listen to you, Baby Sis? What if that doesn’t work?"

Bette shook her head. "It will work."

Joyce was tense. She’d heard Bette’s speech, but she was still leery of this approach. She wanted to win, but more importantly, she wanted her client to win. Joyce never took a case if she didn’t believe in the intentions of her client and she wholly believed in Bette’s sincere desire to parent her child. "Bette, as your counsel, I really advise you to re-think your position. We can try a number of different alternatives . Maybe we can get the judge to order the two of you into mediation. That sometimes is a viable option when . . . " Joyce began.

Bette tossed her a sad smile. "No. No more lawyers."

Though she was in a position of surrender, those four words were the strongest and clearest Bette had spoken all afternoon.

As she stood in the parking lot parting ways with Kit and Angus, Bette felt freer. She had willingly walked away from a court battle to gain custody of the most important person in her world, but she knew she’d made the right decision.

Kit smiled at her sister. "Baby Sis, I hope you know what you’re doing."

Bette shrugged. "I hope so, too."

There was doubt; she’d have been lying to deny its existence. But in her heart, she knew this was the better alternative for all of them at this moment in time. It was nice to make a decision not borne of desperation, but based on clear-formed thoughts and genuine intentions. Having Kit and Angus in her corner had strengthened her resolve. They would support her no matter the outcome and their strength sharpened her presence of mind.

Bette smiled softly. "Thank you both for being here with me today. I needed your support. And I didn’t want to get everyone else all tied up in this mess."

"You’re family. You’ve been more than supportive of me. And you know I couldn’t drag this one away," said Kit, gesturing to Angus.

Angus’ blue eyes sparkled and he smiled as well. "Bette knows I’m her man. Got yo’ back, Sister."

A soft chuckle slipped from Bette’s lips. "I know you do. Thanks again."

The trio hugged before Bette climbed into her vehicle and headed for home. Despite the weighing uncertainty of her future, she felt better than she had in more months than she could count.

And that was enough to give her hope.
