Unusual Meeting – Chapter 33
Previously …
Judy takes out a piece of paper and begins to write down the names of every officer at the police department. “Alright, here’s all the officers.” She shows the list to Tina. “We know we can mark off Bette and Mike as not being involved.”
“We can also mark off the Chief, the Captain, Barton and Flores” Tina tells her as they look at the list even further.
“I’ll turn on the scanner and see who’s on duty. We’ll know that they are ok” Judy tells her.
A few minutes later, they recognize the voices of Sergeant Gomez and Officer Bradley. Judy marks them both off the list.
Judy states, “Ok, the article said that three of them were ranking officers. All the sergeants are accounted for. That leaves the other Detective, the other Lieutenant and …”
Tina and Judy look at each other and say at the same time, “the Commissioner !”
“Holy shit” Judy stammers.
Tina is speechless.
Minutes later. “Ok so there must be two patrol officers involved” Tina continues their thoughts.
“We still have six listed” Judy answers. “I would almost bet that one of them is Rodriguez. I have never liked or trusted him. What do you think?”
Tina answers, “I don’t know any of them very well, except Bradley. He stops by the house often enough. At least he’s cleared.”
“This is crazy. I can’t believe this is happening” Judy shakes her head.
“I know. Can you imagine if we feel like this, how do Bette and Mike feel?”
Tina leaves Judy’s house minutes before 5pm, so she can get home before Bette. As she pulls into the driveway, she sees Bette’s already there. “Wow, that never happens” she remarks to herself as she heads inside.
She glances around the living room, the kitchen and then heads to the bedroom where she sees no sign of Bette. In the bedroom she finds the clothing she wore to work on the floor, indicating she’s been home long enough to have changed.
Tina leaves the bedroom and goes worriedly in search of Bette. She looks outside to the deck and her fears are relieved when she spies Bette seated on the steps of the deck. She watches her for a moment, trying to gauge the emotions she’ll be encountering. Bette is facing away from her, but she can tell by her posture that she’s feeling defeated.
