    Unusual Meeting – Chapter 33

My poor baby.  How bad was her day that she decided to come home and drink?  What must have happened at the office?  I’ve known Bette almost a year and she’s never had one drop of alcohol.  I would guess that this has been the single worst day of her career.  The most important thing I can do is just be here for her.   She glances outside again and sees Bette getting up.

The door opens and Bette comes inside carrying the bottle.  “Want me to put that up for you?” Tina offers, gesturing to the bottle.

“Nah.  I’m not sure I’m done.  I’ll just put it on the table.”

“Ok” Tina answers watching her closely.

Bette puts the bottle down and walks over behind Tina.  She wraps her arms around her waist and places her chin on her shoulder.  Tina places her arms on top of Bette’s.  “I’m so sorry you have to see me like this” Bette tells her as she ducks her forehead onto the back of Tina’s shoulder.

“It’s ok.  I’m so sorry you had such a terrible day.”  Tina turns and pulls her into her arms, holding her tight.  “It’s all gonna be ok, you know?”

“I don’t know about that.”  Tina can see Bette fighting back tears.

“You know Bette, it’s ok to let it go.  You can cry.  I won’t think any less of you.”

Bette pulls back to look at her and pulls herself together.  “No.  Crying is a sign of weakness.  My father taught me that.  I’m fine babe.”

Tina bit her bottom lip.  “Ok.  But I’m here for you, if you need anything.”

“I know babe.  I love you” Bette says as she leans in and pecks her on the lips.  “So, what’s for dinner?”

“Something good and bland.  Nothing spicy, nothing greasy.  Don’t want you getting too sick on me.”

    “Always thinking of me, huh?”

    “Always” Tina answered.

An hour later they had eaten and were on the couch watching a movie.  Tina had managed to steer Bette away from any more alcohol.  They were cuddled up and Bette had fallen asleep on Tina’s shoulder for a change.
