Vignettes of the Heart – 14 – The End

Vignettes of the Heart – 14

Tina paused in the doorway to their bedroom and took in the sight before her. Bette lay where she had fallen, one arm thrown above her head and the other resting on her stomach where her shirt had crept up. How peaceful she looks… How many times in the past have I watched her like this? Hundreds? Thousands? Too many times to count, every chance I could. All I really want is to add thousands more to the count.

As if aware of Tina’s gaze, Bette opened her eyes with a start. Tina was immediately by her side, soothing her. "Shh…Babe, it’s okay. You are home, Angelica is asleep in her crib, and it’s just me here with you." Bette’s body relaxed as she took in Tina’s words and realized her alarm was part of a dream. Her eyes filled with tears of relief. Once she started to cry, she found she could not stop. She lay sobbing, not really understanding why but knowing that she needed to allow this emotional release.

Tina realized what was going on and was glad Bette was allowing herself to cry. She lay down beside her and gathered her into her arms, cradling Bette’s head against her shoulder. Bette clung to Tina, anchoring herself. Tina held her just as tightly, more than willing to be anything Bette needed her to be.

Bette’s sobs gradually died away to a few shuddering breaths, and her grip relaxed. Tina loosened her hold, but kept Bette tucked into her shoulder. "It’s okay, Babe. I’m here, I’m here," she repeated softly. "I’ve got you, Babe, I’ve got you."

Bette slowly raised her head to look at Tina, and spoke. "I’m sorry, T. I keep crying all over you," she said with a weak smile.

Tina returned her smile with a soft one of her own. "I think it’s been a long time coming. You keep everything bottled up until it has to come out one way or another. This time it happens to be through tears." She paused, then continued in a dry tone, "Personally, I prefer tears to broken dishes."

Bette chuckled, recalling the incident of which Tina spoke. "I suppose so," she agreed ruefully. "They’re also cheaper."
