    Walking After You ch.16

Bette deflated against the pillows. Her whole body ached. Her head was pounding and her heart felt like it was freezing in her chest. She thought she had it all figured out. If she knew that she was still so confused, she wouldn’t have brought it all up.

Tina breathed deeply and tried to relax her tensed muscles. She felt like she was being torn apart. On one hand, she was angry. On the other, she was guilt-ridden.

"I’m sorry." Tina said again, more quietly this time.

"No. I’m sorry. I’m the one who’s fucked up in the head." Bette put her uninjured hand on her face. She just wanted to world to fade away.

"When did we get to opposite sides? We used to be a team." Tina asked wonderingly, despair replacing her anger.

"I guess it’s happening." Bette swallowed hard and pressed a finger against her eye, trying to push the tears back.

"What?" Tina asked, looking down at the floor. Her heart was pounding.

"You’re going… I can’t catch up… You’re just being normal… It’s me. I’m not." Bette gritted her teeth when tears still seeped past her hand.

"Normal?" Tina laughed bitterly. "What is that?"

Quiet sniffling was the only sound in the room.

Tina got up and walked to the bottle of painkillers that had rolled under the window. "It looks like you have all you need right here." She spoke quietly to the scene of a setting sun visible through the window. She picked up the bottle and sighed. "Do you want to take a pain killer now?"

"yes, please." Bette’s voice was nasal with tears.

Tina closed her eyes and shook her head, trying to dislodge the emotions that seemed to clog up her thoughts. She went into the bathroom and got a glass of water. Then she walked to the bed and sat down again at Bette’s side.

"Here." Tina took hold of Bette’s hand, the one that was still covering her eyes. She pressed the small white pill into Bette’s palm and closed her fingers over it. She watched Bette bring the pill to her mouth. She took Bette’s hand again and guided the glass of water into Bette’s grasp. She helped it make its trip to Bette’s lips. She watched Bette swallow. She swallowed in empathy. Then she placed the glass on the night stand.

    1. All she has to say….is “TINA I am afraid, afraid you will leave me” thats all she needs to say and it will open up a world of thought, love an action and then maybe she will feel she does not have to get into her skin but on her skin………forever….

    2. So… that went well. No one said what they meant and everyone’s feelings were hurt. They still love each other though, and at least they know it. That’s the base they have to work from, and it’s a good foundation. Keep up the good work 7, I know they’ll get there, Bette’s neuroses and Tina’s fears and frustrations aside. I love this story. Thanks for posting. cheers, 7! :)

    3. Great update. They really are bad in talking it out but maybe since they love each other it will make them come thru this rough patch. thank you for this story.

    4. Well, that was as welcome as pulling out my two front teeth with a crescent wrench. I enjoyed their “talk” about as much as they did, which is testimony to the verisimilitude of your writing. I really like your alternate take on Bette and Tina’s personalities. An insecure Bette and a rather, distant? Tina is a switch-up for sure. They’ve got work to do, and forgiveness to grant to each other. Yes, it’s going slow between them. They could be quaint soul mates, completing each others’ sentences, but where would be the story in that? I’m really enjoying their pain (forgive me). Thanks!

    5. They seriously need to try and talk again. I think they both need to tell each other about their own upbringing and about their past; that would clarify a lot of things. The reason Tina hates therapists and why Bette is so insecure. This was an outstanding update. PPS.

    6. tangled up in words – & feelings :0 now even im confused as to what bette wants from tina – come here/go away? thats a very tall order for anyone. maybe a little more patience & practice saying what they really mean – if at first you dont succeed, try & try again – you can do it bette – thanks 7pm and PPS

    7. Well, that didn’t go too well but hopefully the love they have for each other will get them through this rough time. Maybe they should both go to the therapist together. If Bette was in an environment where she felt safe she might be able to express her feelings better. Tina is being so patient and loving but if this continues she’s gonna break down. :(

    8. He 7PM, Thank you for another emotional rollercoaster ride of a chapter.Bette and Tinaa are really at cross-purposes right now.Yes, the love and adoration is keeping them together as they work through their concerns.Comunication is key at this time. Problem is that they aren’t really listening to each other yet. There is too much guilt and self-deprication. They need to give each other space and then try again. Maybe writing their thoughts down in letter form and then swapping them might be better right now. I think they need some clarity. Couples therapy will help if they are both open to the idea and able to talk through everything in a safe and understanding environment.I hoep they try again soon. I want the loving BnT back.Much graitude from Your Loyal Fan.
