    What Might Have Been 9

                “Bye Bette.”

“Tina is going to freaking kill you Bette. You guys have all these problems and you are screwing around with Candace?”

“For the last time, I am not screwing around with anyone. I tried to tell her this morning and she dismissed me. I had to have the fence put up. This adoption means more to me than apparently anyone is aware of. I would have let the devil put it up. I took down and sold precious art that I have had for years. I have met every damn requirement in order to be able to adopt Angelica. Yet that is not enough. I give up.”

“You should have told Tina. If she finds out, I don’t even want to think about it.”

“Kit, why do you assume I don’t plan on telling her? Has no one bothered to notice that I am trying around here?”

Kit looks at Bette. She realizes that Bette is being sincere. The tears that are in Bette’s eyes are not fake. Bette is truly afraid of losing her family.

“I am sorry, Bette. I do see all the things you are trying to do. I also have noticed the way Tina has been reacting to you and speaking to you. I am sorry, baby sis. I just was shocked to see you with Candace.”

“You should have seen my face when I opened the door. I could not tell her no, I had to get this fence built. I had no choice. I did try to tell Tina. Kit, I think I might be losing her. I can’t lose Tina. If I lose Tina, then I lose Angelica too. I can’t lose them. I love them both so much.”

“I know you do, baby sis. I can see it in your eyes. Something I never thought I would see. A mom. You are a mom now Bette. I can see all the love you have for your baby.”

“She has changed me, Kit. The moment I held her little body, she changed me. I remember encouraging Tina to push a little more. I was right there feeling all the pain that Tina felt. I felt one with her. I think for the first time in our relationship, at the moment I could not tell where I ended and Tina began. It was overwhelming.”
