Work In Progress
Eye of the Tiger by Journey
Risin’ up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I’m back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive
Alice rolled her head to loosen neck muscles before she put her helmet on and tugged on the straps to tighten. The knee and elbow pads she sported were way too big for her petite body. Everyone else on her team seemed to suffer from the same problem. The only thing that fit well, were their helmets and roller skates. She skated back and forth mean-mugging their opponents. On the opposite side of the make-shift rink, the opposing team blew kisses and winked at her as they cracked their knuckles.
Alice noticed that the score keeper had misspelled their team name on the score board. She gave their team roster (with the correct spelling) to Papi, one of the officials, who Alice had gotten into a shit-talking spar with last week. Papi mouthed an ‘oops’ then covered her mouth with her hand as if the incident was an honest mistake.
“You think you’re funny don’t you” she annoyingly told Papi “Fix it!”
“What was it you called us?” she pretended to think about it “oh yeah, we’re just a bunch of illiterates” the petite girl sarcastically replied and shrugged “besides, it’s not a real game. It’s all for fun, right?”
“Fuck fun, we’re here to kick ass” they stood head to neck and played the staring game ‘don’t blink, don’t blink, don’t blink!’ Alice willed her eye lids “Remember the deal when we win” Alice looked down and reminded her.
“Don’t be too sure of yourself gringette. Right back at ya” Papi sneered “I’ll be over there keeping your girl company” she looked at where Kit was standing.
“Don’t bother she’s straight” Alice chuckled
“They’re all straight til they ain’t” Papi laughed and walked away as Alice’s fake smile turned into a glare.
“Fix the board!”
So many times, it happens too fast
You change your passion for glory
Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive
