    You (Part the Forty-Ninth)

“I just can’t get away from the cuteness. It doesn’t matter where I go, it follows me everywhere,” she muttered good-naturedly as she picked up the still-sleeping Socks. “Come on, kitty. Quit impersonating my girlfriend’s sleeping habits and start impersonating her eating habits. I’ll make you a bottle.” Socks just mewed, making it sound more like a grumble, before falling back asleep in Dana’s hand.

“Your powers of imitation are uncanny, Socks,” Dana said with a laugh as she heated the formula on the stove. “What do you say we put some real food in here too? You’re getting big, can’t live on milk the rest of your life.” Socks made no move to respond, still flopped out lifelessly in Dana’s left hand. “I’ll take that as silent agreement.”

Five minutes later, Dana had Socks’ bowl filled with kitten chow moistened with warm formula. Socks caught the smell of food and woke up pretty quickly, mewing at Dana in a rather aggravated tone before Dana set her down in front of the bowl. She ate as Dana cleaned up the few dishes she’d used. “Good girl,” Dana praised her in baby-talk as she picked her up, petting her on the way to the litter box. “Okay, you use that and I’ll go get my shoes. I’ll leave you in with Al while I go for my walk,” she told the kitten gently as she went to the hall to find her training shoes.

Ten minutes later, Socks was on the pillow beside Alice. Dana left a note on Alice’s bedside table so she wouldn’t worry, and headed out for her morning walk. She went slowly, and was happily surprised to discover that her shoulder wasn’t giving her any trouble at all. In fact, she felt pretty damn good, and a hell of a lot more energetic than she had been recently. Deciding that this was a good sign, she walked over to the Planet for breakfast.

To say that the remnants of the group that had gathered was happy to see her would have been an understatement. Bette moved her laptop case off the chair next to her and called out for Kit to bring over an iced green tea. Helena and Shane said hello and asked how she was feeling, and Dana told them happily that she was feeling pretty good.

    1. holy crap i am the first to leave a comment!! yippi for me. ok, so you totally made my day muted with your danish loving ways. i love how real they are in your story and how they communicate with one another, further more, i know you are no IC and would not split our danish up, but i am glad you included her in the story, i like her character, just not the coupling, ya know what i am saying?! thanks for the update muted :)

    2. hey lady. this was wonderful as always. you have such a firm, confident grip on the emotions of these two. it makes me feel ridiculously frivolous. and the stuff at the beginning with al and dana and socks. so effing cute.

    3. Just when I don’t think this can get any better, it does! Loved the Soapbox derby racing and furniture designer bits! Socks is still oh so cute and Al and Dana are closer than ever. Fantastic. I’ll hold you to those 100 parts you promised me! :)

    4. MT, are you writing comedy now? 1st was the waterbed, then socks sleeping like A, followed by the muffins, H falling asleep, march back to A Shrink’s office, five of ’em, hugging a fluffy little fuzzball, gigantic number of channels: 5, eagle swoop down and roost in A’s hair. The funnies just went on and on. Begin a furniture designer & a musician were clever. I could totally picture the two of them in a Miata convertible. It was wonderful to see them having a break from all the heavy stuff. Thanks for taking them to Avenue of the Giants, a truly magical place. I can’t think of a better place for them to visit even though it is another 4 hours north of SF. Oh maybe on the way back they can stop by SF for some fun too. I believe this is the 1st time I read the two of them in a Jacuzzi and it was hotter than the water temperature. Love that S, the yoda who gave D some excellent advice. What a great friend Shane truly was. Did Shane want to ask Dana something but did not have time to do so? “…they’d never felt more connected” completely melted my heart. What a touching ending and a fantastic chapter! MT, you continue to amaze me with your fine writing and story telling. I read somewhere that you are going to school and working long hours. I hope you get to attend to your health first. I love reading your posts as long as you have the time to write. I am sure we all can wait. Thank you again.

    5. “…There’s this quiet inside me here and it makes me realize how small I am…like no matter how scared I get, it’ll be okay because if a place like this can exist, there’s got to be something more out there,” that was pretty deep, but the right sentiment. This trip was just what they needed and damn I am jealous. I want to have my own PCH adventure!
