Woman of My Dreams
Chapter 18
The weeks that followed were very busy. The therapy sessions with Rachael were going well. They had been difficult at first but now more and more Bette was able to admit that it wasn’t her fault. She realized that Jodi had a problem and looking back she could see signs of that problem before their breakup. Tina had also been able to work through her guilt issues over time. They both still had a ways to go but they now had hope that they would make it.
Bette had kept true to her word and only worked part-time leading up to the opening. James had enjoyed taking on more responsibility. The show opened without a hitch. Bette’s disappearance hadn’t been publicized on Peggy’s advice. So it was just your normal publicity but Tina and Bette had arrived in style and the photo ops had been huge. Unknown to them, Peggy was using this opportunity to let a certain Ms. Lerner know that her plan had failed.
Peggy had been keeping track of Jodi. After she had pushed Bette down the ravine, it seems a sickness had fallen on the actual village. The site Bette had been brought to was what was left of the old village. Peggy’s people had convinced the villagers that the sickness had been brought on them by the American Lady. So, Jodi was quickly forced to leave the village. With nowhere else to go, she returned to New York where Peggy had been keeping a close eye on her. Peggy made sure that the opening at the Bette Porter Gallery was covered by the New York papers. Peggy then set about preparing for the demise of one Jodi Lerner.
Once the opening was over, Bette was encouraged to find time to paint again. She set up a studio in the back of her gallery and began to paint some each week. Tina and Bette would go to the beach where Bette would spend hours taking pictures. They took hikes into the mountains where Bette would photograph nature. Then she would spend hours in her studio each week bring these scenes to life. Tina, James and Peggy had finally persuaded her to have her own show. There was another up and coming artist that Bette wanted to show and their work would complement each other well. So, James was asked to stage this show as well.
