Circles and Circles – (Chapter: Boys are stupid, Throw rocks at them (chap13))

Spencer, I came there that night, thinking you wanted to meet with me. I’m guessing now, but I’m assuming you got a note, asking me to meet you there. I did too. I can only assume Sam sent them to both of us. In all that happened afterwards, I never got to explain that night, I guess I thought in respect of what had happened, it wasn’t important. I had no idea Sam was going to be there. Suddenly she was, and I was confused. Then you pulled up, and I had no idea what was going on. Then she kissed me, and everything went haywire. In everything that happened, telling you that Sam kissed me, and that I hadn’t kissed her, seemed like a pretty irrelevant point. I guess I was wrong.

I loved you Spence, with all my heart. We’d been drifting apart, and, even if I had no interest in Sam, I knew you were jealous. I guess I kind of liked it, and played along. I still blame myself for that, and if I hadn’t, Glen would still be alive I guess. I can understand why you hate me. I would too. But I would never play a game like that with you Spencer, it’s below even me.

I know this story is a little hard to believe. Check the envelope.

                                                                Ashley.

Spencer read the letter. Then she reread the letter. Confused, she shook the envelope, out dropped a small folded piece of paper. She opened it.

    Ashley

We have stuff we need to sort out. Meet me at Stenson’s point at 7.50.

                                                                            Spencer

It was a reasonably good imitation of her handwriting.

Spencer sat on her couch, leaning on her knees, letter in one hand and the note in the other. Jesus. All of these years, she’d blamed Ashley for something that… that was Sam’s fault.

‘no’ argued the voice in the back of her head. ‘Enough blame… maybe no one is at fault’.

Spencer stood up and paced around the room. She rubbed her forehead, and pinched the bridge of her nose. What was she going to do. For years she’d blamed Ashley for playing callous mind games with her. Cruel games that had ended with a tragic accident. She had never been able to blame Ashley for Glen’s actual death, even she knew, in her deep grief, that it had been an accident. But it had felt so much like a string of games that Ashley had played for weeks, stringing her along. In her desperate guilt and anger, she had blamed Ashley for her being there.
