Circles and Circles – (Chapter: Boys are stupid, Throw rocks at them (chap13))

Now it looked like someone else’s game. She felt… strange.

The phone was on it’s third ring when Spencer picked it up.

“Hello.” Even to her own ears, Spencer sounded hollow and distant.

“Spencer, what’s wrong?” Clay sounded panicked on the other end of the line. She’d only said hello right, how did he know something was wrong. He was on his mind reader trick again.

Spencer moved like she was swimming in treacle. The world felt slow.

    “Clay..”,

She felt the room spin and sat down.

“Spencer. What’s wrong?” she could hear him calling frantically down the line. “I’ll be right there” And before she could say anything. He was gone.

When Clay arrived, an hour or so later, he burst through the front door without knocking. Spencer glanced up briefly, too rattled, too numb to react. She was still sitting on the couch, phone receiver still in hand. Clay breathed a sigh of relief at her being in one piece. He knelt down in front of her, taking the phone out of her hand and putting it back on the hook.

“Spencer. What’s going on?” he asked, still slightly panicked.

Spencer looked up at him, then wordlessly handed him Ashley’s letter.

Clay read it silently, and then looked up, confusion on his face.

    “Spencer… what’s been happening. I don’t get it”

“I blamed her” Spencer said, hollowly. “For Glen. And it wasn’t her fault. I told her I hated her.”

    Clay looked even more confused.

“Spence, Glen’s death was an accident. You know that.”

“I thought… I thought she’d asked me there. To break up with me in some stupid way. And if Glen hadn’t been there…” Spencer realized that her explanation was rather random and probably didn’t make enough sense, but she didn’t have it in her to clarify any further.

“Spence. I don’t get it. How is Ashley to blame for Glen’s death. She was just there. You were all just there, at the wrong place, in the wrong time. That’s how accidents happen. Otherwise, they’re called near misses.” Clay’s eyes softened, and he took Spencer’s hand in his own. “So some girl lured you and Ashley there playing some dumb game. That doesn’t make either of you responsible.”
