DAWN: The unauthorized new finale to the Twilight series
“Edward,” I whispered slowly.
“Yes, my love?” He replied.
“Now, Edward,” I said shakily, “Please.”
He looked at me over for a moment, then sat up. “What?” I asked. Just a moment ago I thought it would be tonight, and now all of a sudden he couldn’t?
“Bella-”
“I mean, did you not expect me to think it would happen?” I asked, “All of this? Edward, I thought-”
“Can’t I just make a nice night without having to do that?”
I kissed his shoulder as I sat up behind him. I pulled my hair back up, “I understand,” I said, “After I’m changed.”
“Thank you,” He said slowly.
After we got dressed again, I laid on the faint couch while he sat at the end, every now and then feeding me a grape or a chocolate. I felt like an Egyptian Queen having an affair with one of my slaves. He laughed when I told him so.
Edward turned towards the flap. “What?” I asked.
“Hush,” He whispered, “Did you hear that?”
“No.”
Edward stared out the flap for a long while. “Alright,” He said loudly, “Show yourself. I can hear your thoughts.” Before I could ask, Jacob appeared in the tent, hands in the pocket of his shorts.
“Jacob,” I said, almost resentfully, “What are you doing here?”
“Bella, I don’t want to stay mad at you anymore,” He replied meekly.
“Isn’t it a little too late for that?” Asked Edward.
“Stop,” I said, ending the fight before it started, “What do you mean, Jacob?”
“I mean, you’re right. We were best friends. I don’t want to be enemies. I had no right to be so hateful.”
No one said anything for a long while. Edward sat as still as he could, resisting the urge to attack. Jacob stood vulnerably, not wishing to fight. Me, I just wanted to rewind the past year or so and stop from breaking the stupid treaty in the first place.
“I don’t know,” I said finally, “You really hurt my feelings.”
“I know,” Said Jacob, “And I’m sorry. Please forgive me.”
I could see the sincerity in his eyes. And although Edward may not want to admit it, I knew he could too. Edward still sat firmly poised, reading Jacob’s thoughts.
“He really does want your forgiveness,” Said Edward, “I’m surprised he hasn’t fallen to his knees yet.”
“Oh yeah,” Said Jacob playfully, then he dropped on one knee, “Please, my lady. Forgive me for the grief I have caused you, fair Bella.”
I looked at him for a moment, trying to hold back my smile, then broke into laughter, “Alright,” I said, hugging him, “Wait.” I pulled back, “What about the pack?”
“Screw the pack. If they can let Leah go-”
“Leah lost her brother,” I said.
“I don’t care. I’ve tried so hard to hate you, Bella, to see you as an enemy. It’s not working…I’m even a little worried about the Cullens,” He said, glancing at Edward, who smirked. For a second I believed they got along, Edward and Jacob, but I knew better, and I didn’t say anything about it.
* * *
Jacob had left hours before, as I woke up in Edward’s arm, the sun breaking though the cracks in the tent flaps. “You know what,” I said, “I couldn’t have asked for a better honey moon. Who needs the ‘just married’ sign anyways?”
Edward smiled and kissed my forehead.
