    Why are you on the floor?

    Ashley was on the floor. She lay with her head against the pillow and pulled the blanket up around her neck to try and stay warm. After Spencer had kissed her and she’d pushed her away, the pain of sleeping in Spencer’s bed was too much. It smelled like vanilla and cinnamon and every time Ashley had closed her eyes she’d felt Spencer there. But Spencer was not next to her and the emptiness that Ashley felt had everything to do with her. Ashley had never been one to forgive easily and Spencer had just become victim of her nature. She could still see the hurt on the blonde’s face as Ashley pushed her away.

               

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Forgive her, her heart screamed at her. Ashley shoved the thought away and turned over onto her back folding her hands behind her head. She heard the door slide open and held her breath. Vanilla and cinnamon wafted into the room and her heart jumped inside of her chest.

               

     

     

     

     

     

    “Ashley,” Spencer’s voice called out. Ashley realized that Spencer couldn’t see her because she was behind the other side of the bed. She battled for a moment on whether or not to answer her and then eventually decided.

               

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    “I’m over here,” she replied from the other side of the room. She heard Spencer’s footsteps crossing the room. Leaning up on her elbows, Ashley prepared to face Spencer again.

               

     

     

     

     

     

    “Why are you on the floor?” Spencer asked sitting down Indian style next to Ashley and resting her chin in her hand.

               

     

     

     

     

     

    “Because the bed smells like you,” Ashley replied simply.

               

     

     

     

     

     

    “Oh.” Spencer looked at her worriedly. “Do I smell bad?”

               

     

     

     

     

     

    “Yes Spencer, like a toxic farm animal.” Ashley rolled her eyes. Spencer cracked the first smile that Ashley had seen in over six hours and it broke her heart. The air became uncomfortably silent and they both looked around the room.
