Grow Old With Me – (Chapter: Picking Up the Pieces)

I was in my dorm, changing into warmer clothes after my meeting with my academic advisor, when my phone rang. Caller ID: Ash.

    “Hey babe,” I greeted cheerfully.

“Spencer…” the voice on the other end said. I could tell she was crying.

    “Ash, what’s wrong?”

    “Please come,” she pleaded.

“I’m on my way.” I ran out of my room and took the stairs, not bothering to wait for the elevator. “Are you okay?”

    “No,” she sobbed.

    “Are you hurt?”

    “No.” Thank God.

“Okay, I’ll be there in 5 minutes, alright?” I told her.

“Mmhmm.” I hung up. I must have looked like an idiot, sprinting down the streets of Manhattan. But it paid off, because in less than 4 minutes I was in Ashley’s building. She was the penthouse apartment, so taking the stairs wouldn’t exactly be an option. The elevator seemed to take forever, but I finally reached the front door. It wasn’t locked, which worried me, but my first glance inside worried me more. Ashley was crouched against the couch, her knees pulled up and her head buried in them; something made of glass had shattered, as there were pieces of it strewn across the floor.

“Ash,” I began, as I went over to her and sat down next to her, rubbing her back. “What happened?” She shook her head and then burrowed into me; I responded by wrapping my arms around her as she sobbed into them.

    “My dad…” she trailed off.

    “What, babe?”

    “He came. I just… I…”

“Shh, Ash, it’s okay. Just breathe,” I told her. We sat like that for a few minutes, until it seemed Ashley had no more tears left to cry. She attempted to regain her composure, which half-worked. “What happened?”

“He, um… wanted to talk. He apologized for the t.v. thing. And then… and then he started talking about… you know… everything. He wanted me to… give him another chance. And I just… I don’t…” Everything suddenly became so clear to me. Ashley was trying to cover up her sadness and deprivation her father inflicted (though probably not purposely) on her as a child with anger. Yes, I’m sure there was anger there, but at the heart of it she was still reeling from childhood abandonment issues. Of course, this was psych major Spencer talking; if Ashley could read my mind right now she’d probably want to slap me.

    1. *swooshes cape, slightly* i think some one put kriptonite in my cornflakes. I’m barely holding my head up, and my breath is shallow. I’m too weak to fly and its cloudy out. what ever am i to do? WHAT? What’s that you say? AN update from Kozmicblues? AH! and a great one and that, love and forgiveness sympathy and caring, and a segway into trouble/excitement. I”m feeling better already. Kozmic, are you from Krypton? *flys a way only as fast as a spit wad*

    2. Aww…I’m glad that Ashley is going to try to work things out with her dad-it kind of shows us that she’s grown up a little. Great update, can’t wait for the next chapter!

    3. wonderful. amazing. great. I could go on, and on, and on and on, but there are not enough words to describe you’re writing. sorry about the writer’s block, that sucks. Just keep all your readers in mind, I know that whatever you come up with it will be another great installment to an already awesome story. PMS (p.s. thanks again for Pt. 1 and 2) PMS

    9. Can someone hit play on the CD player? We need to cue the cliffhanger music. Unless Miami has changed since I was last there, no good can come from going there when you are in a relationship…hey, I’m not necessarily talking about me. I just might be talking about my friend Blarity, yeah, that’s it. Here’s the thing Ashley, please think things through before you act out and piss Spencer off. Pissing Spencer off means no chocolate sauce for you and no chocolate sauce for you means none for us readers. Be a team player! For what it’s worth Kozmic, you’re still doing an amazing job with this story and I definitely look forward to the next chapter.
