    Being called into active duty.

    We got back in the car to leave and Ashley was genuinely smiling, “Thanks for today Spence. I needed it.”

    “I needed it too. We’ve grown up a lot Ash. We’re no longer the two 16 year old girls that met at a locker.”

    I looked down at my watch; it was going on seven o’clock. I had to be leaving soon; otherwise I wouldn’t make it to Fort Irwin by morning.

    “You have to be leaving don’t you?”

    I looked up at her from my watch, “Yeah.”

    “I have an idea.”

    I smiled, “And what would that be?”

    “How about I drive you. It’ll be fun. And it’ll give us some more time to hang out.”

    I pondered the thought to myself and then decided that it would be a good idea, “Okay…sounds like an adventure.”

    I drove us home and packed my things into my military duffel. I said goodbye to my mom and my dad. My mother was actually crying this time. It was a very emotional goodbye for the three of us. I told them to tell Glen and Clay that I love them and that I’d be back soon.

    I walked out to the car and got in. Ashley seemed excited about the long drive that we had ahead of us. I was dreading saying goodbye to her. And it came all too soon. Four hours later we were pulling up outside the military base. There was silence once again between the two of us.

    “So, this is it.”

    I tore my eyes away from the building in front of me, “Yeah.”

    “Spence, promise me that you’ll write me.”

    “Everyday Ash. I promise you.”

    Her eyes filled up with tears once more, “Alright.”

    She turned to me and I turned to her. We wrapped our arms around one another. I never wanted to let go and I knew that she didn’t either. I took in the scent of her hair and the feeling of her body pressed up against mine. I never wanted to forget it.

    Ashley quietly whispered, “Goodbye my love.”

    “Goodbye Ash. I’ll see you soon. Be safe…and…and I love you.” I gently pulled away.

    I put on my hat, grabbed my duffel, and opened the car door. Just as I was about to shut the door I heard her speak the three words that I had always wanted to hear, “I love you too.”

    3. People drive me crazy sometimes with their lack of communication. Why couldn’t they just be honest with each other about their feelings? If they had, they could have spent those few weeks after Spencer came back form boot camp together doing…coupley things. But as you said, no Spashley for a while. *pouts* I’ll quit pouting if you update soon.
