    Memories – (Chapter: Unprepared)

I was glad that she was able to find peace with the part of her life that had caused her so much pain growing up.

I am still sitting outside her house with a white knuckle grip on the steering wheel, my palms sweating under the pressure.  I might be having a hard time breathing, but I don’t think I have breathed normally in roughly a week, so I am almost accustomed to it.

I don’t know how I get there, but I find myself standing on her front porch waiting for an answer.  Thankfully, I am not thinking when I knock, because if I had been there is a chance I would have been unable to.  I am shaking.  I don’t know if it is noticeable, but I feel it.  I feel it in my hands, my arms and now in my legs.  I am beginning to wonder if I am actually going to have the strength to remain standing.  I hear footsteps.  Nausea begins.  I hold my breath as the door opens.

“Spencer?  Wow!  Hi!  How have you been?  What are you doing here?”  Her mom greets me with genuine warmth and hugs me.

“I, uh, I am looking for Ashley.”  I surprise myself that I am able to put together syllables let alone a whole sentence.

“Oh, she is actually at Gray right now.  I told her how much it has changed, and she wanted to see it for herself, for old time’s sake.  They changed it to an over 21 club, so the high school crowd is gone and there is always live music.  You should go check it out; I am sure she would love to see you.”

“I think I will.  Thank you.  It was good to see you Christine.”

“You too Spencer.  Don’t be a stranger.”

She is really going to be there.  I am really going to see her, in person.  I still have no idea what I am going to say.  ‘Oh hey Ash, I was thinking about how I left you five years ago and I realized oops my bad, I made a mistake, come back to me now’.  I am so pathetic.  I drive at a snail’s pace to delay the inevitable, but it doesn’t work because I make it there in record time.  I find myself in a well-known position; sitting in the driver’s seat with a death grip on the wheel.  I have spent so much quality time with my steering wheel that onlookers are beginning to wonder about us.  I make my way inside the club.  Christine is right.  This place has changed, inside and out.  It is surprisingly jam packed for a Sunday night.
