    Opposites – (Chapter: 22)

"Could we?" Cold anger filled her. "We can talk as long as I don’t ask any questions you don’t want to answer."

Spencer had been expecting the showdown, but not like this. Ashley’s resentment was already wrapping around her. Still, she had a right, and she’d put her off too long. "Ash, if it’s answers you want, I’ll give them to you."

"Just like that?" she snapped, rising. "Just ask and you’ll answer. Nothing more to hide, Spencer?"

Stung by Ashley’s tone, Spencer stared up at her. "It wasn’t a matter of hiding, Ash, not really. I needed time—we needed time."

"Why was that, Spencer?" Ashley asked in a tone that was uncharacteristically cool. Spencer felt a shudder zip down her spine. "Why was time so important?"

"There were things I wasn’t sure you’d understand."

    "Like the baby?"

If she had slapped her, Spencer couldn’t have been more stunned. Even in the moonlight Ashley could see her face go white. Her eyes grew huge and dark and desperate. "How…" The words wouldn’t form. Though they raced around in her mind, Spencer seemed incapable of forcing any through her lips. How had she found out? Who had told her? How long had she known?

"Eric," Spencer managed, though the name threatened to strangle her. "Eric told you."

Sharp disappointment cut through Ashley. Somehow she had hoped it hadn’t been true that she had conceived and rejected another man’s child. "So it’s true," she exclaimed. Turning from her, Ashley stared through the window at the darkness. She found she couldn’t be logical or objective. It was one thing to understand the concept of freedom of choice, and another to apply it to Spencer.

"Ash, I…" Spencer tried to speak. All of her worst fears were hurtling down on her. The gulf between them was already tangible and threatening to widen. If only she had been able to tell her in her own way, in her own time. "Ash, I wanted to tell you myself. There were reasons why I didn’t at first, and then…" Spencer shut her eyes. "Then I made excuses."

"I suppose you thought it was none of my business."

Spencer’s eyes flew open again. "How can you say that?"

    1. I’m surprised no one has left a comment for this story. I started reading this story a while ago, on fanfiction.net, and then you stopped posting it. I just got caught up on here and felt I should comment. Man, that was an intense chapter, damn Paula, telling other people’s business. I don’t remember, but didn’t Spencer have a miscarriage or something? Ashley has the right to be mad though, Spencer cheated on her with her ex. Man, I can’t wait for the next batch of updates. Please update soon.
