    Opposites – (Chapter: 22)

"What you do with your life when you’re married to someone isn’t the concern of another, even when she loves you."

Simultaneous flashes of pain and joy rushed through Spencer. "You didn’t," she whispered.

    "Didn’t what?"

    "You didn’t love me."

Ashley gave a brief laugh, but didn’t turn back to her. "No, of course I didn’t. That’s why I couldn’t stay away from you. That’s why I thought of you every waking moment."

Spencer pressed the heel of her hand between her eyes. Why now? she thought wildly. Why is it all happening now? "You never told me."

This time Ashley turned. "Yes, I did."

Furiously Spencer shook her head. "You never said it. Not once. Even once would have been enough."

In concentration, Ashley’s brows drew together. Spencer was right, she decided. She’d never said the words. She’d shown her in every way she knew how, but she’d never said the words. "Neither did you," she blurted, speaking her thoughts.

Spencer let out a breath that was perilously close to a sob. "I was afraid to."

"Damn it, Spencer, so was I."

For a long, tense moment they stared at each other. Had she been that blind? Had she need words so badly that she hadn’t seen what Ashley had been giving her? The words would never have come easily to her because they meant everything. For Ashley, a declaration of love wasn’t a casual phrase but a declaration of self.

Spencer swallowed a tremor, wanting her voice to be strong. "I love you, Ash. I’ve always loved you. And I’m still afraid." As she held out a hand Ashley glanced down at it, but made no move to accept it. "Don’t turn away from me now." She thought of the child she had lost. "Please, don’t hate me for what I did."

Ashley couldn’t understand, but she could feel. It seemed love for Spencer justified anything. Crossing to her, Ashley took the offered hand and brought it to her lips. "It’ll be better when we’ve talked this out. We need to start clean, Spencer."

"Yes." Spencer closed her hand over their joined ones. "I want that too. Oh, Ash, I’m so sorry about what happened." Her free arm wrapped around Ashley’s waist as she dropped her head on Ashley’s chest. The relief, she thought. The relief of at last being able to tell it to her. "I couldn’t tell you before, when it happened. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know how you’d feel."

    Comments

    1. I’m surprised no one has left a comment for this story. I started reading this story a while ago, on fanfiction.net, and then you stopped posting it. I just got caught up on here and felt I should comment. Man, that was an intense chapter, damn Paula, telling other people’s business. I don’t remember, but didn’t Spencer have a miscarriage or something? Ashley has the right to be mad though, Spencer cheated on her with her ex. Man, I can’t wait for the next batch of updates. Please update soon.
