Taking the Long Way – (Chapter: 25:Mr. Airplane Man)

“Any lady that ’Shley wants her dad to meet must be pretty special.” He said with a wink. I blushed.

Ashley lightly hit him on the arm. “Don’t lay it on too thick James!”

“Righto! Well get buckled up and I will get us out of here so we don’t make you late for lunch.” He said smiling and walking to the cockpit.

The flight was amazing. James was the perfect tour guide talking to us through our headsets and pointing out landmarks. As we got ready to land at the LA airport James’ voice came through the headphones.

“Hey ‘Shley, the limo driver just informed me that some paparazzi have figured out your dad’s plane is coming in. You know the drill.”

“Yup. Got it.” Ashley said. I gave her a questioning look. She took off the headphones and I did the same.

“The paparazzi can be a pain in the ass down here. We are going to taxi the plane into my dad’s hangar and we won’t get out until the doors are closed. The limo will take our luggage to our house. We will leave 20m after the limo leaves in my car that way the crazy picture takers won’t follow us all round.” Ashley spilled quickly like she had done it a thousand times.

“Wow…Ash that is kind of crazy. Has it always been like this?” I asked.

She nodded. “Yup, welcome to a life of no privacy. Only one of a thousand reasons why I am glad to be out of LA for a bit.” she said gloomily looking out a window as we landed. I watched sadness flicker across her beautiful face briefly.

She smiled and squeezed my hand. “Don’t worry. I won’t let paparazzi or anything else spoil this trip.”

We watched the limo with James inside leave through an office window in the hangar. Paparazzi in tow, frantically jostling for position to catch a glimpse of the limo occupants.

“Vultures!” Ashley said shaking her head as they disappeared out of sight. “Come on lets go meet my dad.”

The ‘get-away’ car was a ‘67 Mustang Shelby GT 500E. It looked like the Eleanor car straight out of the movie Gone in 60 Seconds. In was metallic charcoal grey with black rookie stripes, chrome touches…perfection. It was my dream car. I jumped in it with an ecstatic yelp. Ashley laughed as she got in the driver’s seat.
