Taking the Long Way – (Chapter: Chapter 17: Sad Stories)

“Ok thanks.” She yelled over the shower.  I leaned my head against the door.  On the other side she was naked, in my shower probably with soap suds on her body.  FUCK!  Since when did I start getting all philosophical about how girls were feeling before I took them to bed?   UHG….I think I was beyond just liking this girl.  I headed over to borrow grams’ downstairs shower.

I finished my shower and put our wet, whipped cream coated clothes in the washer.  When I walked in Ashley was messing with the stereo system.  She was wearing a pair of sweats and a tank with her hair still wrapped in a towel.  Her back was to me.  I saw another scar that was a bit lower on the same shoulder.  It was smaller and more of a circle shape. The scars were familiar looking to me.

“Hey, I hope you don’t mind, I thought I would find some music.” She said without turning around.  “You almost have more music than I do.”

“I like all kinds of music and I never know what mood I will be in, so everything I have is on my ipod.” I replied as I got a couple of glasses of water from the kitchen.

I heard music coming from my speakers. She had selected Damien Rice.  I liked her choice.  She was sitting on my couch curled with a pillow in her lap when I came into the living room.  I set the two glasses of water down on the coffee table and plopped next to her on the couch.  She was nervously plucking at on of the corners of the pillow.  I decided maybe a question would get her started.

“So are you scars from a gunshot?” I asked.  It was similar to the scars I had seen on my Grandpa Carlin’s leg from when he was in WW II.

“Yeah it is.” She said softly.  “The bullet broke my shoulder blade.  I didn’t even know I was really hurt until I woke up in the hospital and my last memory being that I lost Cass.”

    “Who is Cass?” I asked

“She was my girlfriend.” She said with a slight smile that told me she had and possibly still did have strong feelings about her.

    5. you’re story has so much more depth and meaning than most. You show such incredibly vulnerable human qualities to a ‘t’. can’t wait for the next post, because you describe the fire between them almost even better!
